Demi Moore slams US culture: 'Puritans, religious fanatics and criminals'

It was months of intense campaigning, uncertainty, and, finally, a Republican victory to bring Donald Trump back to the White House. Progressive-leaning stars like Demi Moore don't like the outcome at all.

In a campaign in which Hollywood has been fully involved, reactions from the Mecca of Cinema have not been long in coming. The reactions made by Demi Moore at the French Cinematheque in Paris, collected by 'Variety', made a particularly big impact.

"America is built on Puritans, religious fanatics and criminals. [And] you’re kind of seeing [as much] in our election right now," Demi Moore said.

As she was honored for her role in 'The Substance', the actress related the film's theme to current political events in the United States. She compared her country to Europe, highlighting the sensitivity and different ways of thinking in the Old Continent.

"There's a lot of fear in America around the body. That’s something I’ve never understood or related to. I've certainly stirred the pot in a few of the films I've chosen," she said.

The reality, according to Demi Moore, is that "It never made sense why we can celebrate the body in art but fear it in cinema."

Her latest film, 'The Substance', addresses, in a raw and direct way, the taboos of the body, age, and clichés in society and the entertainment industry.

"Being someone of a certain age, there was greater value in showing oneself with complete abandon," the actress said. "Being willing to be seen with flaws, with imperfections, [as someone that is] not 20 or 30 years old," was an important message she wanted to convey in her movie.

Demi Moore hopes the film is a demonstration of the power of women. "Maybe a man could [direct this film], but I don't think a man could have written [it]. This is such a personal exploration."

If viewers were surprised by director Coralie Fargeat's "visual style, her symbolic style, and the way in which she used sound, that's just because there hasn't been enough time for women yet up until now."

The actress also acknowledges the personal side of her character in 'The Substance'. "It is really what I have lived my own life regarding body image and the expectations of what it is to be a good woman, what you have to look like, and how you have to behave. So, yeah, it’s a very personal journey about how this has impacted my whole being."
