Legendary 90s bands: then and now

When this Swedish band was created in 1992, it was very successful in their home country. After the release of their second album in 1995, it gained worldwide fame. Its original members were very young at the time. Lars-Olof Johansson and Bengt Lagerberg were 19, Nina Persson and Peter Svensson were 18, and Magnus Sveningsson was 20.

The band took a six-year break from the stage but returned in 2012 for a tour. Their current line-up includes Lars-Olof Johansson (1973), Bengt Lagerberg (1973), Nina Persson (1974), Magnus Sveningsson (1972) and Peter Svensson (1974).

British band formed in 1991 by five members: Liam Gallagher, who was 19 at the time, Noel Gallagher, 24, Paul Arthurs, 26, and Paul McGuigan and Tony McCarroll of 20. The group was initially called 'The Rain'.

Despite being one of the most successful bands in the UK, it dissolved in 2009. In the photo we see Liam Gallagher (1972). The Gallagher brothers perform separately from each other but still play Oasis songs.

Pearl Jam emerged in 1990 when Eddie Vedder was 26 and Mike McCready, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were 24. Some time later, the band incorporated two more members.

Throughout its existence, the band has sold more than 60 million records worldwide and performed several charity shows. Its current line-up includes Eddie Vedder (1964), Mike McCready (1966), Stone Gossard (1966), Jeff Ament (1963), Matt Cameron (1962) and Boom Gaspar (1953).

In 1994, a time when several boybands were rising, five female artists formed the Spice Girls in London. They were close in age: Geri Halliwell (Ginger) was 22, Melanie Chisholm (Sporty) 20, Victoria Beckham (Posh) 20, Melanie Brown (Scary) 19 and Emma Bunton (Baby) 18. They lived together in Berkshire and rehearsed at Emma's mother's house.

In 2019, the Spice Girls (without Victoria Beckham) did some shows in the UK as part of the Spice World Tour. A few years earlier they all appeared together in one event: Melanie Chisholm (1974), Melanie Brown (1975), Geri Halliwell (1972), Emma Bunton (1976) and Victoria Beckham (1974).

This Belgian band had started in its current composition in 1997 when singer Geike Arnaert was 18 years old. Their international break came at the turn of the century with the single 'Mad About You' (2000). The song featured in various commercials and movie soundtracks worldwide. Geike went solo in 2008 and Hooverphonic continued with other singers.

The original three came back together again, and what's more, they were Belgium's entry for the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest! It's an interesting choice, because Hooverphonic has always been part of the alternative rock, trip hop, and indie pop scene. It have them an edge, though, in the midst of Eurovision's folkloric eurodance avalanche.

The four members of Destiny's Child were still children when the band was formed in 1990. Beyoncé Knowles was 9, Kelly Rowland 11, LeToya Luckett 9 and LaTavia Roberson also 9 years old. Over the years, LeToya and LaTavia left the group and Michelle Williams joined it.

Beyoncé Knowles (1981), Kelly Rowland (1981) and Michelle Williams (1980) continued with the group until 2005, when each of them continued with a solo career.

They started in Orlando, Florida (USA) in 1993. At the time, Nick Carter was 16, Howie Dorough was 23, Brian Littrell 21, A.J. Mclean was 18 and Kevin Richardson 25. Nick Carter rejected an offer from the 'Mickey Mouse Club' to be part of the Backstreet Boys.

The band recorded a new album ('DNA') in 2019 and began a world tour before the coronavirus pandemic broke out. In this recent image, we can see Howie Dorough (1973), Kevin Richardson (1971), Nick Carter (1982), A.J. Mclean (1978) and Brian Littrell (1975).

NSYNC also came from Orlando, Florida (USA), two years after the BSB. Its members varied much in age: Justin Timberlake was the youngest of the group with 14 years, Chris Kirkpatrick was 24, Joey Fatone 18, JC Chasez 19 and Lance Bass 16. Lou Pearlman represented and released the band at the idea of Chris Kirkpatrick after the singer has been rejected by Backstreet Boys.

The band dissolved in 2006, but in 2018 its members reunited on the walk of fame. In the picture of this memorable day, we can see JC Chasez (1976), Chris Kirkpatrick (1971), Joey Fatone (1977), Lance Bass (1979) and Justin Timberlake (1981).

In 1986, the year this pop rock band was created, Gwen Stefani and John Spence were 17, Eric Stefani 19, and Tom Dumont was 18. Six years later, No Doubt recorded its first album. Base player Tony Kanal, here on the photo next to Gwen Stefani, was dating the lead singer.

This band formed in Manchester (UK) in 1989 and included Gary Barlow, then 19, Mark Owen, 18, Howard Donald, 22, Robbie Williams, only 16, and Jason Orange, who was 20.

Take That is still active without Jason Orange and Robbie Williams, though the latter returned to the band between 2010 and 2011. Boyz II Men was created in 1985 but really broke through in the 1990s. First it had five members and then four. They were very young! Shawn Stockman was 13, Wanya Morris 12, Nathan Morris 14, Michael McCary 14, and Marc Nelson was also 14 at the time.

Shawn Stockman (1972), Wanya Morris (1973) and Nathan Morris (1971) continue to lead the band forward.

When this music trio was formed in Atlanta, Georgia (USA) in 1991, Tionne Watkins was 21, Rozonda Thomas was 20 and Lisa Lopes was also 20.

In 2002, Lisa Lopes passed away in a tragic car accident. Rozonda Thomas (1971) and Tionne Watkins (1970) did not want to put anyone in her place, although they did count on the occasional performances of other artists. TLC sold over 65 million records.

Wet Wet Wet is a Scottish band formed in 1982. It rocked in the 80s and 90s with hits like 'Love is All Around', 'Sweet Surrender', 'Julia Says' and 'If I Never See You Again'. In the year of its creation, Tommy Cunningham was 18, and Graeme Clark, Neil Mitchell and Marti Pellow were 17.

In 2017, vocalist Marti Pellow (1965) decided to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Kevin Simms.

A Californian punk band formed in 1992. Its founders were Tom DeLonge, aged 17, Mark Hoppus, 20, and Scott Raynor, as young as 14.

The first band members Tom DeLonge (1975) and Scott Raynor (1978) were replaced by Matt Skiba and Travis Barker. Mark Hoppus (1972) is the only original Blink-182 member remaining.

Coldplay was formed in London (UK) in 1996. At the time, Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland were 19, while Guy Berryman and Will Champion were 18. The band considered their manager and composer Phil Harvey as their fifth member.

Its four original members have stayed in the band, and it seems to live an eternal peak. Coldplay does seem to have switched to more upbeat, poppy music, something that the record label surely likes.

The original members of this British group were: Easther Bennet, aged 20 at the time, her sister Vernie Bennet, 21, Kelle Bryan, 17, and Louise Nurding, 18.

Easther Bennet (1972), Vernie Bennet (1971) and Kelle Bryan (1975) were the longest remaining members of the band. It stopped over 10 years ago, however.

When this American band started in 1998, its members were Julian Casablancas of 20 years, Nick Valensi, 17, Albert Hammond, 18, Fabrizio Moretti, 18, and Nikolai Fraiture, 19.

Considered by many as 'The Rescuers of Rock', The Strokes released 6 albums. Its formation is the same as when it was created.

This electronic music duo emerged in 1989 when Tom Rowlands was 18 and Ed Simons 19. They were schoolmates and called themselves 'The Dust Brothers'. However, there was already a band in the U.S. with that name, so they had to change it.

This alternative rock band formed in the U.S. in 1994. Their members were experienced musicians. Singer Shirley Manson was 28 years old when it all started, Duke Erikson was 43, Butch Vig 39, and Steve Marker 35.

Some Garbage songs became famous in movies like '007 - The World Is Not Enough'. Shirley Manson (1966), Duke Erikson (1951), Butch Vig (1955) and Steve Marker (1959) are still in the band.

The ultimate grunge band from Seattle, founded in 1987, brought to fame its members Kurt Cobain, 20 years old, Krist Novoselic, 22, and Dave Grohl, the youngest with 18. Nirvana changed drummers several times until Dave Grohl's definitive arrival in 1990.

The band fell apart after Cobain's death in 1994. Dave Grohl (1969) and Krist Novoselic (1965) continued with other musical projects.

Weezer is another band from the 90s that is still active today. In the year of their creation, Rivers Cuomo was 22, Jason Cropper 21, and Matt Sharp and Patrick Wilson were 23. Mikey Welsh joined the band between 2000 and 2002 until he was replaced by Scott Shriner.

The current members of the band are Rivers Cuomo (1970), Patrick Wilson (1969), Brian Bell (1968) and Scott Shriner (1965).
