The Paris Olympics and other major events in 2024

The next twelve months will be full of events, events and anniversaries that will write the history of 2024. This is a year in which the Paris Olympic Games, to be held between 26 July and 11 August, will undoubtedly play a major role. The image shows Phryge Olympic, the mascot of the Paris Games.

Frederick of Denmark takes the throne

Frederick of Denmark becomes King of Denmark on 14 January, the date on which his mother, Queen Margrethe abdicates after 52 years of reign.

Inauguration of the new Santiago Bernabéu

Mid-January sees the inauguration of what will be one of the most spectacular stadiums in the world: the new Santiago Bernabéu, whose remodeling works have cost more than 1 billion euros. A spectacular space which, as well as being the home of Real Madrid, will be used to host musical events. Concerts by Taylor Swift and Karol G have already been confirmed for 2024. We are not sure if there is a special room to pay referees.

Mickey Mouse

As of 1 January, on his 95th birthday, the first version of Mickey Mouse will be in the public domain. Later versions will not.

100th anniversary of Lenin's death

21 January 1924 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of the Russian communist leader Lenin, whose mummy can be visited in his own Mausoleum in Moscow's Red Square.

Euro 2024

The most important European football event of the year will be Euro 2024, which will take place in Germany and for the first time will be held three years later than the previous edition, which had to be postponed for a year due to the Covid pandemic. It will take place between 14 June and 14 July 2024.

Year of Chillida

2024 is the year of the Spanish artist Eduardo Chillida, as it is the 100th anniversary of his birth (10 January 2024 to be precise), which is why a multitude of acts and events will be held in his honour. For example, in the Hernani Museum, in the Casa de Cultura in Avilés, in the National Sculpture Museum in Valladolid and in the Würth Museum in Künzelsau (Germany).

30 years since Kurt Cobain's death

April 5th marks the 30th anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of the band Nirvana, who became an icon of the grunge generation.

US presidential election

The US presidential election will be held on 5 November. And it looks set to be a fierce one, with Donald Trump and Joe Biden set to battle it out.

Bicentenary of Lord Byron's death

On 19 April 1824, Lord Byron, one of the most famous British poets in history, died in Mesolongi, Greece. Upon his death, the German novelist, poet and playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote: "Rest in peace, my friend; your heart and your life have been great and beautiful."

300th anniversary of Kant's birth

22 April marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of one of the most influential philosophers of universal thought: the German Immanuel Kant. On his tomb, which is in Königsberg Cathedral (Kaliningrad), a sentence from the 'Critique of Practical Reason' can be read as an epitaph: "Two things fill the mind with admiration and respect: the starry sky above me and the moral law in me".

Bicentenary of the National Gallery in London

May marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the National Gallery in London, undoubtedly one of the most important museums in Europe and the world. To mark the occasion, the gallery will open 12 exhibitions across the UK.

100th anniversary of Franz Kafka's death

3 June marks the centenary of the death of the Czech writer Franz Kafka, one of the most influential authors of the 20th century and one of the greatest representatives of existentialism and German literary expressionism. He developed such a personal style that the term 'Kafkaesque' was invented to refer to his work.

Copa America 2024

Football will take centre stage again in the summer of 2024, as the Copa America, kicks off on 20 June. One of the biggest attractions will be to see Messi's Argentina trying to retain their title as champions, which they won in 2021.

Capital change in Indonesia

On 17 August 2024, an historical event will take place: the change of capital city in Indonesia. The city of Nusantara, built from scratch on the island of Borneo, will replace the current city of Jakarta. The reason for this is flooding, as 40 % of the land is below sea level and is sinking by an average of 7.5 centimetres per year.

100th anniversary of the birth of Truman Capote

If he were still alive, on 30 September 2024 the American novelist, screenwriter, playwright and actor Truman Capote would have celebrated his centenary. Let his centenary serve as an indicator to review his work.

Mission Artemis II

Also in November, NASA will launch its Artemis II mission, which will take us back to the Moon. Although the astronauts will not set foot on the lunar surface, it will be the first time they have orbited the satellite since 1972.

On 17 December it will be 35 years since the first episode of 'The Simpsons' was broadcast, making it the longest-running animated series in history.

Dragon Ball anniversaries

Another anime series celebrating a birthday is 'Dragon Ball', as it celebrates the 35th anniversary of 'Dragon Ball Z' (anime) and the 40th anniversary of 'Dragon Ball' (manga). And to commemorate it, a new video game, 'Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 4', will be released and a new saga, 'Dragon Ball Daima', will be trained.

Celebrities turn 60

Incredible as it may seem, celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, Lenny Kravitz, Elle Macpherson, Keanu Reeves and Marisa Tomei turn 60 in 2024.

Posthumous novel by Gabriel García Márquez

In 2024, 10 years after the death of one of the most important writers of the 20th century, Gabriel García Márquez and Random House will release a posthumous novel by the Colombian Nobel Prize winner, entitled "En agosto nos vemos" (See you in August).
