Teens in Hollywood from the 80s

In the 1980s, cinema was changing and the young actors and actresses were the faces of that change. Some are still going strong; others are a distant memory, but they all have a place in the hearts of a whole generation. These are the teen stars of Hollywood in the 80s.

Phoebe Cates (1963)

A true teenage recognizable face from the 80s. She rose to fame as Linda Barret in 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High' (1982) and followed up with 'Gremlins' (1984).

Phoebe Cates (1963)

Married to actor Kevin Kline since 1989, she chose to retire in the mid-1990s and devote herself to her family and a clothing store she owns in New York.

Michael J. Fox (1961)

In the same year - 1985 - Michael J Fox filmed 'Back to the Future' and 'Teen Wolf', two films that made him a legend of the 80s.

Michael J. Fox (1961)

His career was strong and the actor was loved and respected in Hollywood, but in 1998 he announced to the world that he was suffering from Parkinson's disease, which greatly limited his films. Despite the disease, he has continued to work in film and television but to a much lesser extent than in the 80s and 90s.

Molly Ringwald (1968)

The true queen of the 80s. She was a symbol of a generation and the muse of John Hughes. Ringwald played Samantha Baker in 'Sixteen Candles' (1984), Claire Standish in 'The Breakfast Club' (1985) and Andie Walsh in 'Pretty in Pink' (1986) and symbolised the vulnerability and angst of the teenagers of the time.

Molly Ringwald (1968)

Although on a lesser scale, Molly Ringwald has not stopped working since the 80s. Combining film and television, the actress has lost the shine she once had but is still remembered as the recognizable face of the 80s.

Corey Haim (1971)

Corey Haim was an absolute teen icon of the 80s. The actor combined exuberance and vulnerability - something that was evident in 'Lucas' (1986) and 'The Lost Boys' (1987). The two Coreys (he and Corey Feldman) were the Dynamic Duo of that time.

Corey Haim (1971)

His untimely death (in 2010), coupled with abuse scandals that have been discovered over the years, have made him an example of an era in which excesses were all too common.

Jennifer Connelly (1970)

Her breakthrough in cinema with 'Labyrinth', (1986) was dazzling. She had a hypnotic beauty and an overflowing talent at only 16 years old. She immediately became a pop culture icon.

Jennifer Connelly (1970)

Jennifer Connelly hasn't stopped working since. At the rate of one film per year. She reached her crowning glory in 2002 when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for 'A Beautiful Mind'.

Patrick Dempsey (1966)

He had two key roles that made him an 80s heartthrob: Ronald Miller in 'Can't Buy Me Love' (1987) and Randy Bodek in 'Loverboy' (1989). Even so, he always seemed to lag behind other Hollywood stars.

Patrick Dempsey (1966)

Over the years, his leading man tag has multiplied, especially thanks to Dr. Derek Shepherd, the actor's most recognizable role on 'Grey's Anatomy'.

Elisabeth Shue (1963)

Elisabeth Shue in the 80s was brilliant. She played Ali Mills in 'The Karate Kid' (1984), Chris Parker in 'Adventures in Babysitting' (1987) and Jordan Mooney in 'Cocktail' (1988). About half the world was in love with her.

Elisabeth Shue (1963)

In 1996 she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in 'Leaving Las Vegas' but throughout her life she has not stopped working. Her most recognisable role of the 21st century has been Madelyn Stillwell in the series 'The Boys' (Prime Video).

Johnny Depp (1963)

He debuted in 1984 with 'Nightmare on Elm Street' and also brought the world one of the most epic deaths in the history of cinema. 'Private Resort' (1985) and 'Cry Baby' (1986) helped make him on of the famous teen faces of the decade.

Johnny Depp (1963)

Interestingly, it was the 90s that brought Johnny Depp the most glory, with roles like Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood, while the new century brought him the famous Jack Sparrow. Nowadays, he has swapped acting for music after his complicated divorce with Amber Heard.

Winona Ryder (1971)

'Lucas' (1986), 'Beetlejuice' (1988) and 'Heathers' (1989) were enough to make Winona Ryder the dream woman for millions of fans. She was sweet, relentless and overflowing with talent. Ryder had everything to take the world by storm and she did.

Winona Ryder (1971)

Like Johnny Depp, she established herself in the 90s with movies like 'Dracula' (1992) and 'Reality Bites' (1994) but fell into disgrace after being caught shoplifting. It took her a long time to come back but, with 'Stranger Things', she has reconciled with Hollywood. Her fans never abandoned her.

Ralph Macchio (1961)

Macchio became known thanks to 'The Outsiders' (1983), then was crowned with the saga 'The Karate Kid' (1984) and then... disappeared. Ralph Macchio, no matter who, will always be Daniel LaRusso.

Ralph Macchio (1961)

His return to glory came with 'Cobra Kai', the reboot of 'The Karate Kid' where he returns to life as Daniel LaRusso and has closed the cycle of his career in a masterful way.

Brooke Shields (1965)

Shields was 14 years old when she played Emmeline Lestrange in 'The Blue Lagoon' (1980). She was another to catch the eye of millions and generate a huge fan base.

Brooke Shields (1965)

The complicated thing about an early success like hers is that it is hard to do better and, in the case of Brooke Shields, she never did. However, the actress has been very measured in each of her works.

Corey Feldman (1971)

'Gremlins' (1984), 'The Goonies' (1985) and 'Stand By Me' (1986) give an idea of what Corey Feldman was in the 80s. The second of 'The Two Coreys' and the one alive... unlike like his career.

Corey Feldman (1971)

It's hard to believe that with Corey Feldman's extensive filmography, he hasn't had more success after the 80s but success went to his head and that, in Hollywood, has a price.

Jennifer Grey (1961)

Jennifer Grey was, of course, Baby in 'Dirty Dancing' (1987), one of the most memorable romantic films in the history of cinema and shared one of the best musical scenes ever seen in Hollywood with Patrick Swayze. She had everything to take it all by storm but she had a nose job and her career was over.

Jennifer Grey (1961)

She has continued to work in film and TV but lost her recognizable face due to surgery.

Kiefer Sutherland (1966)

Sutherland played David, the charismatic leader of 'The Lost Boys' (1987), a role that was a passport to Hollywood Olympus that the actor took advantage of wonderfully.

Kiefer Sutherland (1966)

Despite having notable successes in film, it was Jack Bauer, his character in the series '24' that really springboarded him to fame.

Jamie Lee Curtis (1958)

The muse of horror in the 80's, Jamie Lee was an iconic part of the 'Halloween' saga which started in 1978 and had a run of sequels.

Jamie Lee Curtis (1958)

Jamie Lee Curtis has carved out a sensational career over more than four decades that has been crowned with an unexpected Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 'Everything Everywhere All at Once' (2022).

River Phoenix (1970)

Chris Chambers, his role in 'Stand By Me' (1986), gave River Phoenix immediate teen star status. He then appeared twice with Harrison Ford - once as a young Indiana Jones. He was young, famous, a millionaire, and adored all over the world.

River Phoenix (1970)

Unfortunately, River Phoenix did not know how to manage the weight of fame and died, at the age of 23, of an overdose. It happened outside a famous nightclub in West Hollywood and his brother Phoenix witnessed it all.

Julia Roberts (1967)

Before playing the wonderful Vivian, Julia Roberts had already swept the board with 'Mystic Pizza' (1988) and 'Steel Magnolias' (1989). Obviously, 'Pretty Woman' (1990) would come to overshadow everything else.

Julia Roberts (1967)

We also have to remember that, in addition to an Oscar for 'Erin Brockovich' (2000), Julia Roberts has three other Oscar nominations. She is a true legend with a talent even wider than her smile.

Tom Cruise (1962)

What can you say about the Tom Cruise of the 80s? 'The Outsiders' (1983), 'Risky Business' (1983), 'Top Gun' (1986), 'Cocktail' (1988) and 'Rain Man' (1988). And that's only in a decade. He's the most profitable actor in history for a reason.

Tom Cruise (1962)

Success after success, four Oscar nominations and more power in Hollywood than many production companies. Tom Cruise is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history.

Demi Moore (1962)

Demi Moore came to the screen with roles as Jules Van Patten in 'St. Elmo's Fire' (1985) and Debbie Sullivan in 'About Last Night' (1986), with many other hits throughout the decade.

Demi Moore (1962)

Her start in the 90s came with 'Ghost' (1990), making her a true a Hollywood star at the end of the century. The 21st century has not been as prolific for her in the film industry, but she continues to be a face in Hollywood.

Andrew McCarthy (1962)

One of the most forgotten heartthrobs of the 80s. His toupees caused young fans to faint and his smile shone with its own light in 'Pretty in Pink' (1986) but, above all, in 'Mannequin' (1987)- In the latter, his chemistry with Kim Cattrall was one of the best of a whole decade.

Andrew McCarthy (1962)

He has worked non-stop since then, although his roles have not had such an impact. In television, he has been in series such as 'The Blacklist', 'The Resident' and 'Adam's Secret'.
