Sofía Vergara reveals she overcame cancer
The Colombian actress from 'Modern Family' usually doesn't talk about the intimate and difficult topic. However, she made an exception for the Stand Up to Cancer telethon on August 21, 2021. Sofía Vergara revealed during that show that she had suffered from thyroid cancer when she was 28 years old.
Stand Up To Cancer is an initiative to raise funds for the research of cancer and its possible cures. Sofía Vergara is one of the celebrities who supports the good cause.
The Stand Up for Cancer telethon was produced by Reese Witherspoon. Along with stars like Chris Evans and Stevie Wonder, she and Sofía Vergara took the stage on that Saturday night.
"At age 28, during a routine medical appointment, my doctor noticed a lump on my neck," Sofía Vergara recounted on air during the telethon. "They did a lot of tests and, finally, they told me that I had thyroid cancer."
The actress said that her cancer was discovered when she accompanied her son on a visit with the endocrinologist. Without that visit, the cancer might not have been discovered as early as it was.
"When you are young and you hear the word 'cancer', your mind goes to many places," the actress explained. "But I tried not to panic and decided to educate myself."
Vergara added that she was "lucky to have caught it early and had the support of my doctors and, most importantly, my family." She managed to overcome the disease and eliminate all traces of cancer cells in her body.
It should be noted, though, that the Colombian actress remains under strict treatment to control the hypothyroidism that she suffers. She ensures that this was a matter of accustoming herself to the new situation and remembering to take her medicine every morning.
As an ambassador for the cause, Sofía Vergara opened her heart about the difficult time she had when she was so young. She wants to create awareness in people about the importance of regular health checks and the recognition of the disease's early signs.
After overcoming a possibly life-threatening disease, the actress decided to live life to the fullest - both professionally and personally. For one, she managed to become one of the highest-paid women on TV.
The star recently announced the premiere of 'Koati', a film in which she and Marc Anthony are executive producers. They brought together more than 25 stars who lent their voices to the animated comedy.
Vergara is also still a judge for the 'America's Got Talent,' along with Heidi Klum, Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel.
On a personal level, Sofía Vergara enjoys her married life with fellow actor Joe Manganiello. The couple have been husband and wife since 2015 and are still living a true honeymoon.
The actress is also more relaxed after winning the legal battle against her ex-partner, Nick Loeb, regarding the use of their frozen embryos.
According to information gathered by People magazine, the judge rejected Loeb's appeal and prohibited him from using the actress's genetic material without her consent. According to the ruling, both Loeb and Vergara had signed an agreement prior to freezing the embryos, in which this prohibition was clearly stated.
Sofía Vergara's son, Manolo González, is now almost 30 himself. He has the same age as his mother when she was battling cancer.
