New Spider-Man cartoon

‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ is the new animated show from Disney+. Set in an alternate timeline, Peter is not under the wing of Tony Stark but Norman Osborn this time around. From what we have seen so far, it looks like a lot of fun. But let’s take a look at Spider-Man on screen. From his first appearance until now.

Created

Spider-Man made his first appearance in comic books in 1962, appearing in Amazing fantasy  #15. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Nobody could have anticipated the success that this teenage webslinger would have on the world.

First on-screen appearance

The Spider-Man animated series ran from 1967-1970 and had Spidey’s famous song as its theme tune. ‘Spider-Man, Spider-Man does whatever a spider can…' etc etc.

Live action series

In 1978, a live action series starring Nicholas Hammond as 'The Amazing Spider-Man' was released. It got decent ratings but was cancelled after only 13 episodes. Remember this was the 70s and special effects were not what they are today.

Spidey in Japan

In the same year a Japanese version also appeared, lasting an impressive 41 episodes. However, this version had very little to do with Marvel's Peter Parker.

Guest star

In 1979 he made 2 appearances in the cartoon Spider-Woman. Before disappearing for a couple of years.

Two at once

1981 brought a second animated series focusing on Peter Parker during his student years, which was followed by 'Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends'. 'Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends' featured other Marvel heroes and villains as well as a couple of new ones, too.

The best animated Spidey ever?

1994... what many consider to be the best Spider-Man cartoon is this version. It has some dark moments and also some emotional ones too. 'Spider-man The Animated Series' in my opinion is the pick of the animated bunch.

Poorly received

'Spider-Man Unlimited' was released in 1999 but arguments over rights and other issues limited the show’s success, along with poor reviews.

Change at the top

In 1999, Sony Pictures acquired the world wide film rights from MGM - and how things changed for the better.

In 2002 the world of Spider-Man changed forever

Sam Raimi’s Blockbuster starring Tobey Maguire took an incredible $114.8 million during its opening weekend, establishing a new opening weekend record and securing the history of Spider-Man’s power at the box office.

Spider-Man: The New Animated Series

Taking full advantage of the success of the film, 'Spider-Man: The New Animated Series' relied heavily on CGI and many saw it as a step back from the classic comics. It wasn’t well received and ran for just one season.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

With the confidence of having the production companies secured and a budget of 200 million dollars, the sequel gave us more of what we wanted. Spidey fought not only Doc Oc but also his best friend. Spider-Man 2 grossed 795.9 million dollars.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Sadly the production company interfered and wanted to add Venom for marketing purposes, as well as last minute script changes. Add in some unhappiness within the cast, the final instalment became the worst of the three.

The Spectacular Spider-Man (animated)

Coming in at second place for catchiest theme tune is 'The Spectacular Spider-Man'. The series intended to run for five seasons, but only lasted two due to legal issues. This enjoyable version stayed true to the original story for most part.

The Amazing Spider-Man

In 2012, we got an updated Spider-Man big screen adaptation starring Andrew Garfield as Peter and Spidey. Garfield played a more sociable and likable version of Peter Parker and his onscreen chemistry with Emma Stone, who played Gwen Stacey, was electric.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2012)

This cartoon couldn’t really decide which direction it was going and was never really a hit with traditional comic book fans. However, it did manage 104 episodes.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

Due to the success of the first film, we got a sequel with Spider-Man facing Electro and the Green Goblin again two years later. Many fans couldn’t relate to the fact Peter was just too cool.

Marvel's Spider-Man (2017)

Marvel's Spider-Man ran for three seasons, however the final season was re-titled 'Spider-Man: Maximum Venom'. This series introduced a variety of Spider-People as well as some of the classics.

Tom Holland

As well as appearing in 3 films as the title character, Holland has also appeared as Spider-Man in 'Captain America: Civil War', 'Avengers: Infinity War', and 'Avengers: Endgame'.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Tom Holland's Peter is perfect, he chases bad guys, struggles to balance being a superhero with the academic studies as well as battling his personal feelings and emotions. He also has some good friends. Holland slipped into the role perfectly.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

The first animated Spider-Man feature film has so much energy and a feeling of uniqueness in a franchise as old as this. It is visually stunning and with this teenage Miles Morales we get a fascinatingly modern take on our hero.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Deceit, sadness and loss for Spidey as he battles monsters in Europe and learns Tony Stark is more difficult to replace than he first thought. The ending has a jaw dropping revelation that leaves us salivating for the next film.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Seeing all three actors who played Spider-Man onscreen together was just spectacular. Holland continued to give his magic and dads got a bit of nostalgia watching their version of Spidey help the new one.

Spidey and His Amazing Friends (2021)

One for the kids from Disney Jr. The family-friendly series aimed toward younger kids follows Peter Parker/Spider-Man in a series of adventures with his new team.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

Hurtling across the Spider-Verse trying to hunt down the Spot. Miles and Gwen become a team essentially sharing co-lead status. Another hit starring Miles Morales. Where (and who) will Spidey be next?
