Why Selena Gomez (32) can't have biological children

'Only Murders in the Building' star Selena Gomez has spoken openly about her desire to become a mother, revealing that she is unable to have biological children due to medical complications.

"I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby's in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while", the singer and actress said in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.

Despite this harsh reality, the singer is determined to start a family, through different options.

"I'm excited for what that journey will look like, but it'll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don't care. It'll be mine. It'll be my baby," Gomez confidently expressed in the interview with Vanity Fair.

Her close relationship with her family has also influenced her thoughts on motherhood. Selena is the godmother to her cousin Priscilla's children and has witnessed the challenges and joys of parenting.

This is not the first time the superstar - and recent billionaire - has spoken about the problems of having biological children.

In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, she explained that her need to take medication for her health problems meant that she would not be able to bear her own children.

"That's a very big, big present thing in my life. However I'm meant to have them, I will," she told the magazine at the time.

Selena Gomez has spoken publicly about the way lupus defines her life. She even had a kidney transplant related to her lupus.

And then there's her diagnosis of bipolar disorder, about which she has openly spoken in her documentary. For both illnesses, lupus and bipolar disorder, she's receiving medical treatment that could influence the gestation of a baby.

The singer revealed to Vanity Fair that being a mother has always been a key part of her life plans. Before meeting her current boyfriend, Benny Blanco, Gomez had already set the goal of starting a family before the age of 35.

Gomez and Benny Blanco began their relationship in July 2023. They had worked together on several songs over the years. Gomez describes Blanco as 'a complete light' in her life and her best friend.

Although engagement rumors have swirled, Gomez has made it clear that she is in no rush to tie the knot. She says she prefers to live in the present and protect what she has with Blanco without outside pressure.

The artist also shared with Vanity Fair how her mother's experience, having Selena when she was 16, has made her more cautious about marriage. Gomez values stability and doesn't want to rush into making decisions about her family life.

Despite the medical challenges she faces, the actress is hopeful about her future as a mother. "I feel blessed that there are wonderful people who are willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both great options for me," she said.

According to Vanity Fair, the singer has previously spoken about adoption, because her mother was adopted, too. If she hadn't been, "I don't know what her life would've been like. She and I are very thankful for how life played out," she said, according to Vanity Fair.
