Problems increase for the Oscar-nominated actress

Problems have been mounting for Karla Sofía Gascón as a result of her controversial tweets. In addition to being banned from several promotional events for 'Emilia Pérez', the publication of a new version of her autobiographical novel has now also been canceled.

The publication of her book has been canceled

The 'Dos Bigotes' publishing house, which specializes in LGBTQ content, has canceled the publication of the new version of 'Karsia'. It's a book that Gascón signed before her transition, under her former name - Carlos - according to the newspaper El Mundo.

A republication of her memoirs

The new edition of this book was scheduled to be published on March 17, 2025, to coincide with the new interest in the actress due to the acclaimed Netflix film.

Editors do not want to support someone who speaks against equality

The publisher said it canceled the publication due to its commitment to "equality, inclusion, and diversity...  We must be consistent with our way of thinking and act most coherently," Dos Bigotes explained in a statement.

Controversy after old tweets resurfaced

The publishers made their decision at the end of January. They reacted to the revelation of old tweets in which Gascón spoke out against Islam, the African-American victim of police violence George Floyd, and even against Selena Gomez, her co-star in 'Emilia Pérez'.

Painful discoveries during the victory tour of 'Emilia Pérez'

'Emilia Pérez' is a French film about the life of a transgender woman in Mexico. It is spoken in Spanish and was directed by a Frenchman, Jacques Audiard. The film has been highly acclaimed and nominated for multiple awards.

The notorious tweets

Among the old tweets that got Gascón into trouble, there were a few in 2020 and 2021 in which she referred to Muslim families in Spain with remarks like: "How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY" (translated as such by Variety).

About Muslims, African-Americans, and Chinese

With regard to George Floyd's death by the hands of a cop in 2020, she reminded her followers that he was a 'drug addict swindler' and that it was probably more a matter of class than of race. In addition, she referred to Covid-19 as a 'Chinese virus' and spoke in derogatory terms about the Chinese.

The actress has been excluded from the film's promotion

Karla Sofía Gascón has been removed from the promotion of the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She is not included in internal emails with Netflix and the platform will no longer pay for her travel and accommodation during any awards ceremony.

She doesn't appear on the posters

The erasure of her image has not only been in-person, but she has also stopped appearing on the film's posters.

Zoe Saldaña's reaction to the scandal

Gascón's comments had barely come to light when her co-star in 'Emilia Pérez,' Zoe Saldaña, explained that she felt very sad about the whole situation.

She did not recognize the person from the tweets

"I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film," she said at a panel during its presentation. "My experience and my interactions with them [were] about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural, and gender equity."

Director Jacques Audiard has distanced himself from Gascón

For his part, Jacques Audiard, the film's director, has also distanced himself from Gascón, as he explained to Deadline website.

'Inexcusable' and 'self-destructive'

His words were quite harsh. "What Karla Sofía said is inexcusable. I have not spoken to her and I do not want to do so. She is in a self-destructive approach that I can't interfere in, and I really don't understand why she's continuing."

She didn't even go to her 'native' Goya awards

Even though she is Spanish, the actress did not even attend her country's version of the Oscars, the Goya Awards.

Representatives were sent instead

Representatives of the two Spanish distributors of 'Emilia Pérez', went to the Goya Gala to pick up the prize for best European film.

She feels she is a victim of 'cancel culture'

Karla Sofía, for her part, has stated that she is a victim of 'cancel culture'. She has also asked the public how she could move forward after all the commotion she has experienced.
