The movie premiered 20 years ago

'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl' was released on the 28th of June 2003. It was directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer. The film was an astonishing success and had several Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominations. The lead actor, Johnny Depp, won a Screen Guild Actors award.

A succesful Disney movie franchise

The film was inspired by a Disneyland Theme Park ride called 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and the movie premiere was held in the Disneyland Resort Park in California. It was the first Disney movie to be PG-13.

More 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies

As it was such a tremendous international box-office success, more 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies would follow: 'Dead Man's Chest' (2006), 'At World's End' (2007), 'On Stranger Tides' (2011), and 'Dead Men Tell No Tales' (2017).

A young but promising cast

In the beginning, no one could have imagined how the success of the movie would influence the young and still relatively unknown actors in the cast. Although Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, and Orlando Bloom were already famous, 'Pirates of the Caribbean' launched other protagonists into Hollywood's star system as well.

What are they doing now?

20 years since its release, these actors and actresses have continued to work successfully. Do you remember them all?

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp)

The most famous, clever, chaotic, and weird pirate of the Caribbean is, without a doubt, Captain Jack Sparrow. Although he has spent many years without a crew and a vessel, the ingenious pirate tries to recover the Black Pearl. To do so, he has to face a mysterious part of his past.

Johnny Depp was already a veteran actor

Long before playing Captain Sparrow, Johnny Depp had his acting debut in the famous horror '80s film 'Nightmare in Elm Street' and was famous for his participation in the television show '21 Jump Street' (1987-1990).

Rise with indie and Burton films

The actor was soon drawn to independent cinema and starred in many important movies that have now become cult films, like 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape?' (1993), 'Dead Man' (1995), and 'Donnie Brasco' (1997). Depp's recognition came especially thanks to his collaboration with Tim Burton. The actor and the director have worked together in eight films, the first and perhaps most iconic being 'Edward Scissorhands' (1990), while 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (2005) and 'Alice in Wonderland' (2010) are also highly acclaimed.

Among the top earners in Hollywood

'Pirates of the Caribbean' meant Depp's big step into more mainstream cinema, with titles like 'The Tourist' (2010) or the J.K. Rowling films 'Fantastic Beasts' (2016) and (2018). He became one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.

Johnny Depp today: coming back from a period of scandals

Due to the actor's constant public feuds and scandals, Depp's career slowed down in recent years. However, now that his domestic violence case against Amber Heard seems to be in the past, the actor is invited once again to play in productions like 'Jeanne du Barry' and Johnny Puff' (both 2023).

William Turner (Orlando Bloom)

The young blacksmith of Port Royal unwillingly gets involved with Jack Sparrow. He has to risk everything and even discover some hard truths from his past in order to save the love of his life, Elizabeth Swann.

Orlando Bloom, best known from 'Lord of the Rings'

In the beginning, he had some small roles in the movies 'Wilde' (1997) and 'Black Hawk Down' (2001), but Bloom's acting breakthrough came with the role of Legolas in the trilogy 'The Lord of the Rings' (2001, 2002, 2003). The success of the movie pushed the actor towards another fantasy saga: 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.

Orlando Bloom's sweetest moment in the industry

After his appearance in 'LOTR' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean', Bloom was praised for his work in both sagas and was enjoying the biggest successful moment of his career. The actor then appeared in two other important projects, 'Troy' (2004) opposite Brad Pitt, and 'Kingdom of Heaven' (2005), directed and produced by Ridley Scott.

Orlando Bloom now

In recent years, the actor has also started working in television. Bloom had a main role in the Amazon Prime series 'Carnival Row' from 2019 to 2023. He's also released the movie 'Gran Turismo' in 2023 and there's more coming up. It's not the blockbuster work of his 'Lord' and 'Pirates' years, but he's doing fine.

Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley)

Elizabeth Swann, the delicate-looking damsel in distress who is kidnapped by some of the most fearful and cursed pirates, is actually an adventurous spirit who will do anything to be in charge of her own destiny.

Keira Knightley broke through with 'Bend it like Beckham'

The English actress started to work at a young age, doing commercials and small TV roles. She also was Natalie Portman's handmaiden in 'Star Wars'. However, Knightley's breakthrough came with the movie 'Bend It Like Beckham'.

Keira Knightley's succesful career

After her successful part in the 'Pirates' series, Knightley continued her brilliant acting path in movies like 'Love Actually' (2003), 'King Arthur' (2004), 'Pride and Prejudice' (2005; earning her nominations for the Golden Globe and Academy Awards), 'Atonement' (2007), and 'Anna Karenina' (2012), among many others.

Knightley's recent projects

For 'The Imitation Game' (2014), along with Benedict Cumberbatch, she was nominated for an Oscar again. Her recent work includes 'Boston Strangler' on Disney +.

Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush)

This great character is the actual captain of the Black Pearl. He seeks to break the curse that he and his crew have suffered since they last encountered Jack Sparrow.

Geoffrey Rush, another veteran actor

He then appeared in the movies 'Elizabeth', 'Les Miserables', 'Shakespeare in Love'. and 'Quills' (2000). The latter two earned him Oscar nominations.

The actor's long list of awards

The success of his blockbuster role as Barbossa didn't push him away from more serious productions like HBO's show 'The Life and Death of Peter Sellers' (earning him a Primetime Emmy) and the theater production 'Exit the King' (2009), for which he won a Tony Award. Then, 'The King's Speech' (2010) along with Colin Firth, earned the actor a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Where's Geoffrey Rush now?

It's been a little quiet around Geoffrey Rush in recent years, apart from his Emmy-nominated role in the TV show 'Genius' (2017). Some #MeToo scandals for acts he was never officially proven guilty of, seemed to have slowed down his career. In the actor's next project, 'Raised Eyebrows', we will see Rush playing Groucho Marx, although the release date of the film is yet to be announced.

Commodore Norrington (Jack Davenport)

The always correct Commodore Norrington serves the British Navy in Port Royal. He sails the whole Caribbean Sea in search of his beloved Elizabeth Swann while she is captured by pirates.

Since then, the actress has continued to grow her career, for example as Gamora in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' and as Neytiri in 'Avatar: The Way of Water' in 2022.

Pintel (Lee Arenberg)

Besides being a member of the scary and cursed crew of the Black Pearl, Pintel's comic appearance and clumsiness hinders Barbossa's plans.

Finally, Arenberg's most relevant role in television has been the one of Dwarf Grumpy in the ABC series 'Once Upon a Time' (2011-2018).

Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook)

And here's another pirate who along with Barbossa, Pintel, and the rest of the crew is trying to break the curse of the Black Pearl. He and his wooden fake eye will comically fail over and over to follow through with his plans.
