These shows won (multiple) Emmys for Best Drama: Have you seen them?

Well the Emmy’s have awarded their prizes at a ceremony that recognises excellence within various areas of television and emerging media. As TV series are becoming more and more popular, often receiving more attention these days than large movies, we take a look back at some of the best series winners over time in case you haven't seen them... and tell you why you should.

At the 2024 Emmys, Shogun had a fantastic run with the award for Outstanding Drama Series and both lead actor and actress. It beat not only the beast that is 'The Crown' but also the brilliant 'Slow Horses'.

Set in Japan during the early 1600s amidst a civil war, the story centres around the relationship between the European captive and his new Japanese environment while dealing with power struggles within Japan at the time.

Breaking Bad has received a total of 248 nominations and won 92 industry awards since its premiere in 2008. In 2014, the show entered the Guinness World Records as the most critically acclaimed television series of all time.

September 22, 1999 brought the world The West Wing. Overall, the show won 100 awards from 289 nominations, including 27 Primetime Emmy Awards from 98 nominations, including sweeping the floor for the first four seasons in the Outstanding Drama Series category.

Clare Danes was also nominated for an incredible 23 awards for her role as CIA officer, Carrie over the two seasons of Homeland. Alongside Damian Lewis, the two created magic on screen and history in the world of TV.

Released after 8 years of being held by Al-Qaeda, Marine Nicholas Brody must adapt to life again. However CIA operative Carrie Mathison believes he may be a traitor. Gripping, magical and scary all at once.

The series was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series seven times, winning in 2004 and 2007. It was the first series on a cable network to win the award. Additionally, the series won five Golden Globe Awards.

Follow Tony Soprano and his wise guys as the run the streets of New Jersey. Funny, dark and powerful, The Soprano’s has it all, apart from a fitting ending.

"Pilot" is the most nominated episode of the series, receiving nominations from fifteen different associations; the episode won eight awards, including four Primetime Emmy Awards. The series has won a total of 11 Emmys over the years.

This show follows the survivors of Oceanic Airlines Flight 815, which crashes on what seems at first a deserted tropical island. Although the show itself was incomparably good, the last episode left many frustrated.

Ranking second ever for the most Emmy wins, Game of Thrones will go down as one of the most successful series in history. No wonder the show won year after year. According to statista, in 2019 alone, the show was nominated for a total of 32 Primetime Emmy Awards.

Well, not sure there are many left who haven't seen Game of Thrones but, just in case, it's an epic tale of Fire and Ice. Think dragons in the sun vs creepy dead guys in the snow along with incest, fighting for the crown and a good dose of violence. No one talks about the last episode, though.

In between Game of Thrones hogging the awards year after year, we find 'The Handmaids Tale' nestled in the middle.  It certainly caused a stir and attracted attention for its strong messaging and shocking scenes.

Set in a dystopian future, June is forced to live as a concubine under a fundamentalist dictatorship, hoping one day to be re-united with her daughter.  There may be a few episodes in which the star, Elisabeth Moss, isn't crying.

Mad Men has been widely praised as one of the greatest television series of its era and of all time by The Guardian, Rolling Stone and Time magazine. The series won the award for Outstanding Drama Series four times from eight nominations.

Set in the 1960’s where the creative director at Sterling Cooper, tries to balance his exceptional professional life and wavering personal life.

Succession won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama in 2020, 2022, and 2023. Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin won both the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Sarah Snook won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Macfadyen won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series twice for the show. Just a few awards to its name!

In this dark comedy, a family fight for power over the family company when the head of the family announces his retirement. Full of shocks, turns, twists and conspiracies.

It also won Best Television Series – Drama twice at the 74th Golden Globe Awards and 78th Golden Globe Awards and swept the floor in 2021, winning all 7 drama categories. Certainly worth a binge of all 60 episodes?

This is another one that, if you haven’t seen it, you probably live on the moon. The Crown follows the ups and downs of your average London family. Every two years the cast gets a rehab and more Emmys are always won!
