Two burglars broke into Windsor Castle

Recently, the news emerged that two masked men had raided the Windsor Castle estate on the night of October 13. It happened while Prince William, Princess Catherine, and their children were sleeping at their nearby home, Adelaide Cottage.

A robbery in October

In a statement, Thames Valley Police confirmed that they received a report of the theft. "At around 11:45 pm on Sunday 13 October, we received a report of burglary at a property on Crown Estate land near to the A308 in Windsor," the statement said.

Looking to steal vehicles

According to The Sun, the intruders stole vehicles from a farmhouse on the royal property.

Bypassed the security zone

The attackers, two masked men, crossed a six-foot fence and used a stolen truck to breach a security barrier.

Sped away with quad bike and pickup truck

They then fled in a pickup truck and a quad bike stored in a barn on the Shaw farm, inside the castle's security zone.

Well-prepared

According to investigators, the intruders had probably studied the location of the vehicles and the best time to strike without being detected. "They must have been watching Windsor Castle for some time," a source told the newspaper.

The children were nearby

Because the attack occurred on a Sunday night, the royal family, including Princes George, Charlotte, and Louis, ages 11, 9, and 6 respectively, must have sleeping at their residence just five minutes away from the scene of the robbery, The Sun reports.

A decision to reduce police presence

The incident occurred after a decision was made to reduce the presence of armed police at the two main entrances to Windsor Castle.

Why cut back on security?

This decision was taken due to a lack of qualified officers. Authorities at the castle also wanted to make the experience for tourists more pleasant. They were believed to be uncomfortable with armed police officers.

It happened at Shaw Farm

The attack took place at Shaw Farm. It's an operational farm within the royal estate. In this historical photo, we see the late King George at Shaw Farm in 1942.

Vehicles stolen from the farm

On the terrain of the farm, the vehicles were parked that the burglars were after.

Damage

Following the raid, the security barrier was badly damaged and had to be replaced.

The King and Queen were not there

King Charles and Queen Camilla were not in Windsor at the time of the robbery. Charles was in Scotland and Camilla was in India, preparing for a tour of Australia and Samoa.

A series of incidents

This intrusion adds to a series of security incidents in recent years. In 2021, a man armed with a crossbow tried to enter the castle to attempt to kill Queen Elizabeth II.

Other incident in February

In addition, in February this year, an unarmed man was found in the gardens of the King's apartments at Windsor Castle. He was arrested on suspicion of trespassing and detained under the Mental Health Act.

An ongoing investigation

With regard to the latest burglary, no arrests have been made so far. Authorities declare that the investigation is ongoing.
