The best social media posts about Trump, Biden, and Bernie Sanders
It was the talk of the past days: the transition of power between Donald Trump, who left quietly and defiantly, and the new U.S. president Joe Biden. Celebrities joined the conversation, and here's what they had to say.
In the morning of January 20, 2021, hours before Joe Biden would become president, the outgoing executive Donald Trump quietly left the White House to avoid meeting his successor.

'Hercules' actor Kevin Sorbo is among the few Hollywood stars who remained pro-Trump until the end - even during the Capitol riots. On Inauguration Day he tweeted: "Thank you President Trump for all you’ve done. You will not be forgotten."
"He seems like a very happy old man looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!"
It was not just some random joke by the young environmental activist. She copied the infamously sarcastic tweet the president himself had sent when the teenager made news in the world. "She seems like a very happy young girl..." he had tweeted above a picture of Thunberg looking serious.
Twitter also had a lot of fun with the video images coming from Donald and Melania Trump's arrival in West Palm Beach, Florida. After getting off the plane, the former president stood still to greet reporters and pose for photos. Melania Trump did not. She snubbed the press, as more than five million viewers have seen by now on social media, and walked straight to the car. "Melania when it's 12:01 and her shift ended at 12:00," Michal Cohen tweeted.
Donald Trump said few things during his farewell in Washington DC, but one of the remarks he kept repeating was: "I'll be back," and: "We will be back, in some form."
His promise inspired Instagram creatives to come up with different ways for the defeated tycoon to return. How about this one: "Hi, I'm Mrs. Trumpfire, the new assistant in the White House."
Anyway, soon enough, it was time to move on to the next president. Many celebrities gave their opinions during and about the ceremony of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris' inauguration.
"Singing our National Anthem for the American People is my honor. I will sing during a ceremony, a transition, a moment of change—between POTUS 45 and 46. For me, this has great meaning."
"My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly. I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land. Respectfully and kindly, Lady Gaga."
'Michelle Obama' was trending on Inauguration Day. Her monochrome, "head-to-toe plum ensemble" as Harper's Bazaar describes it, had everyone electrified that day.
"Past Presidents and First Ladies (esp Michelle) chic AF #BidenHarrisInauguration."
The colorful monochrome outfits of the ceremony's participants inspired many Twitter users to make their own rainbow montage of the event. This one was first spotted on the account of Jay Hosfelt, @HossFross. Many tweets referred to 'the coat' as the protagonist of the day.
But wait, who's the man in the green? He's another protagonist of the inauguration ceremony.
Vermont's Senator Bernie Sanders, an opponent of Joe Biden in the Democratic primaries for the presidency, attended the inauguration ceremony in an outfit that was markedly different from the colorful and stylish brand coats on the podium. You see him on the right of this picture.
The famous politician seemed to be freezing in the winter cold. "FeeltheBrrrr," people joked, in a reference to his supporters' rallying cry: "Feel the Bern."
Photos like this one circulated widely on twitter. Here's Bernie joining the blue-collar workers in the 1930s on the world famous picture "Lunch atop a Skyscraper." Bernie was also seen in front of post offices, on the moon, on a bench next to Forrest Gump, and on Santa's lap. The Senator later responded to the memes with humor. "Now people see that we make great mittens in Vermont, and coats too, by the way," he told CNN.
Besides laughs, there were also tears for celebrities watching the inauguration ceremony.
"In tears watching this extraordinary moment for women in the U.S. and the world. Vice President @KamalaHarris," Oprah Winfrey tweeted.
Katy Perry kept it short:
"#UNITY = you and I ".
She was probably preparing for this spectacular show of 'Fireworks' at the end of the day.
"Congratulations to President @JoeBiden and Vice President @KamalaHarris. I’m honored and proud to witness this moment in history. #InaugurationDay"
"Today I am hopeful for great change and a positive reset. I am praying for @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris as they face the many challenges ahead. Thank you for spreading the mission of love and acceptance!"
Even though it was Donald Trump who cited Arnold Schwarzenegger's most famous movie character, saying repeatedly "I'll be back" on his way out of Washington, the actor thought mostly of the new president during Inauguration Day.
"I’m rooting for you @JoeBiden. Your success is the country’s success."
As one of the hosts of the evening gala 'Celebrating America,' actress Kerry Washington was particularly closely involved in the event of Inauguration Day.
"Sooooo much work to do. But TODAY I want to celebrate. And pray. And revel in our tremendous power (even against all odds) to make history happen."
"I can't put into words how grateful I am as a parent to be able to share the full inauguration with my children and not worry about white supremacy and lies being central and celebrated," Chelsea Clinton said while her kids were spotting grandpa nodding off and grandma having a ball on the podium.
There was one character missing, though, and the kids noticed: Joe Biden's dog. "Only thing I had to explain is why Major Biden wasn't there!"
Journalist Maria Shriver missed the event in person this year, probably because of coronavirus prevention measures. She watched the ceremony from home.
"I’ve attended several #Inaugurations starting as a young child. Today I sit in my home watching on TV. Nonetheless, I’m excited, I’m emotional, I’m inspired, I’m hopeful. I’m part of the sea of humanity standing up for this moment, holding this man & his family in my embrace."
Along with a picture of her daughter watching Kamala Harris getting sworn in, actress Mindy Kaling (of Indian descent, like Harris) said: "It matters. Happy Inauguration everyone."
Actress Bette Midler is a longtime Democrat and Joe Biden supporter.
"THANK GOD!! Our long national nightmare....well, you know the rest! God bless #joeandkamala and God bless America."
Recently sworn in, Joe Biden went directly to the office so sign a pile of Executive Orders.
Mira Sorvino read that Joe Biden was directly going to his office after the Oath, and she said: "He’s rolling up his sleeves and getting to WORK!"

In the evening of Inauguration Day, a gala with music and messages from all over the country was broadcast from the Lincoln Memorial and the National Mall. Bruce Springsteen opened the event with a sober ballad. It was noticeably cold in wintertime Washington DC.
Actor Tom Hanks was the host of the entire event, and he returned frequently to address the TV audience. Unlike others, the Oscar-winning star did not wear an overcoat - just a suit. "Get him a coat!" was a frequent outcry on social media. And also: "tom hanks survived covid only to die at the inauguration of hypothermia."
Remember that Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were among the first celebrities to test positive for COVID-19 in early 2020.
Viewers immediately noticed the similarity of Tom Hanks presenting the Inaugural Day gala ('Celebrating America') and his appearance years earlier in 'The Simpsons'.
