Torn: more than 25 years ago

It's been more than 25 years ago since she released an iconic song: 'Torn.' Whatever happened to the unforgettable Natalie Imbruglia?

Natalie Imbruglia: where is she now?

This is what she looked like when the Australian singer - born in Sydney - broke through internationally with the single 'Torn.' Whenever we hear the song, it takes us back to the 1990s. Natalie Imbruglia has moved on since those years, though. Let's have a look at the whereabouts of the beautiful singer and actress.

Dancing from an early age

Natalie Jane Imbruglia was born on February 4, 1975. She started dancing at the age of 2. As a teenager, she studied ballet, tap, and Highland dancing.

Acting career

She dropped out of high school as a teenager to begin her acting career. At age 17, she landed a role in the soap opera 'Neighbours.' What started out as a 2-week guest role turned into a 2-year job.

A worldwide hit

As other 'Neighbours' stars like Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan had done in the 80s, Natalie Imbruglia released a pop album in 1997. The single 'Torn' would make her famous all over the world. Who doesn't remember this music video?

Did you know it wasn't originally her song?

'Torn' had been written by two members of the band Ednaswap. It was first recorded by the Danish singer Lis Sørensen in 1993. Later, it would be performed by Ednaswap itself. But it never reached the level of fame of Imbruglia's version.

Torn and awarded

With a number one position in worldwide airplay at the height of the MTV era, Imbruglia became a familiar face on TV screens all over the world. She won a Billboard Music Award, an ARIA Music Award, and an MTV Video Music Award while also getting nominated for a Grammy.

Much more music

After the album 'Left of the Middle' (1997), which included 'Torn,' Imbruglia released five other albums. The most recent was 'Firebird' in 2021. None of the albums had as many hits as her first one, though.

Contract with L'Oreal

But Natalie Imbruglia did a lot of other work too. In 2002 she signed a six-figure contract with L'Oreal to be its new face for a summer campaign.

Films

And even though she became more inclined towards music after 'Torn,' she continued to participate in several films, such as 'Johnny English' (2003), 'Closed for Winter' (2009), 'Underdogs' (2013), 'Among Ravens' (2014), and 'Little Loopers' (2015).

Natalie Imbruglia's personal life

In her personal life, she dated actor David Schwimmer from 'Friends' in the 90s and got married to Daniel Johns, the frontman and guitarist of the rock band Silverchair, in 2003. Their marriage lasted for five years, and Imbruglia hasn't been married since. In 2019, she gave birth to a baby boy that she had via In vitro fertilization.

Meanwhile, she continued to make headlines with music, even though it wasn't necessarily with her own albums. In 2015 she covered the Daft Punk song 'Instant Crush,' originally performed by The Strokes' lead singer Julian Casablancas.

The Masked Singer

In 2022, Natalie Imbruglia won the third edition of 'The Masked Singer' in the UK. She was dressed as a panda.

A little later, in August 2022, Imbruglia shared the stage with Coldplay, and they performed 'Torn' together. Chris Martin introduced Imbruglia saying: "She's been a legend for us since we were 15 years old and she is still a legend now."

Nostalgia and new adventures

While being honored for her iconic song in the 1990s, Natalie Imbruglia continues to be relevant in the music industry with new covers, original singles like 'Build it Better' in 2021, and top performances in TV shows. This way, new adventures and nostalgia continue to go hand in hand.
