The Lord of the Rings: The return of the king

With 11 Oscar nominations and 11 wins, the last installment of 'The Lord of the Rings' confirmed that it is one of the best sagas in the history of cinema. Peter Jackson honored Tolkien's work two decades ago.

Lost in Translation

Sofia Coppola's second movie surprised the audience with the incredible chemistry of the protagonists: Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. A story about loneliness, distance, and the comfort people may find in totally unexpected places.

Mystic River

Clint Eastwood directed Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, and Laura Linney in this psychological drama that is as tough as hypnotic. With time, there is no doubt that it is one of the best movies in history.

Big Fish

The film is a beautiful tale made of many beautiful stories. Tim Burton surprised us with this colorful movie where Ewan McGregor delighted the audience with his performance. Some of its scenes are now part of the history of cinema and the end is as beautiful as heartbreaking. A must-watch.

Love Actually

The undeniable contemporary rom-com of the century. A beautiful combination of British stars tangled in different love stories where we can see one of the most memorable love declarations: the one of Mark (Andrew Lincoln) to Juliet (Keira Knightley).

Kill Bill: Volume 1

The character that Quentin Tarantino promised Uma Thurman turned out to be an iconic gift. The Bride and the Black Mamba are now part of Hollywood history.

Finding Nemo

The adventure of a clown fish and his friend with memory problems who is desperately looking for his son, Nemo, turned out to be one of the most beautiful animated films of the decade.

Oldboy

Mystery, thriller, drama and violence, a lot of violence… In this movie, we are able to see many different genres from different perspectives. A murder, being in prison for 15 years, many questions, and only 5 days to know the answers. A frenetic masterpiece.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Another pirate movie that turned out to be one of the best sagas of the century allowed us to meet one of the most recognizable characters of all time: Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp. Following the reckless pirate in this adventure, we have Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

Good Bye, Lenin!

An absurd, humorous but sadly realistic look at the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. This is the story of two brothers trying to make their mother believe that Germany is still divided. Hilarious.

Dogville

Lars Von Trier chose Nicole Kidman to play Grace, a woman who has to run away from the mafia and ends up in a traditional town where things are run differently. A very contemporary classic.

21 Grams

Alejandro González Iñárritu masterly made apparently disconnected stories meet at the same point. In the movie, a car crash joins the fates of Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Melissa Leo, among others.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

Peter Weir delighted us with this wonderful story about the adventure of Captain Jack and the events he experienced during the Napoleon Wars and the Chilean Independence. It received 11 Oscar nominations but ended up only winning two of them (Photography and Sound Effects).

The Last Samurai

Tom Cruise as a Japanese Samurai? Of course! Is there anything that the mega Hollywood superstar can't do?

Picture: Warner Bros Ent.

My Life Without Me

Ann's life (which she thought was miserable and boring), changes forever when she discovers she is going to die. From that moment on, she tries to fix everything and leave her life as organized as possible.

Te doy mis Ojos (Take My Eyes)

Hard-to-watch story about domestic violence, the inability to overcome the past, and how your instinct sometimes can't help you get out of a bad situation. Laia Marull, Luis Tosar, Candela Peña, and Rosa María Sardá deliver a fantastic performance.

The Matrix Reloaded

This sequel divided fans: Some loved it, but others thought that the first movie was so perfect and the ending so logical that it was better to leave it like that. However, the Matrix saga was too successful and interesting not to do more movies.

Elephant

Gus Van Sant makes a reference to the phrase 'Elephant in the Room' in the title of this realistic and hard story about the Columbine shooting. The story is told through different perspectives of both victims and killers.

Picture: New Line Cinema

The Italian Job

An adrenaline-filled film where everything seems to go two times faster, especially the driving scenes. The plot is surrounded by revenge and treason stories which don't allow the audience to even blink once.

Picture: Paramount Pictures

Identity

James Mangold creates his own Agatha Christie story and reunites ten people who don't know each other in an abandoned motel; suddenly, one by one, they start mysteriously dying. As the murders continue, the protagonists find out that maybe they are not complete strangers as they originally thought…

Bruce Almighty

Jim Carrey is the protagonist of the story where God decides to grant its powers to an ordinary TV reporter, Bruce. In this crazy story we can see how Jennifer Anniston balances an unchained Jim Carrey and Morgan Freeman is the perfect actor to play God.

Picture: Universal Pictures

Monster

Patty Jenkins showed us a whole new side of Charlize Theron as she played the serial killer Aileen Wuornos. She murdered seven men who, supposedly, had abused her in the past. Her incredible performance was rewarded with an Oscar.

Picture: Newmarket Films

School of Rock

The charismatic Jack Black won over the juvenile audience with his role as Mr. S, a messy and erratic singer who is kicked out of his rock band and ends up teaching music in an elementary school.

Underworld

A war between vampires and werewolves sounds like fun, and it was. Choosing Kate Beckinsale as the main vampire of the movie was a great idea as well. It is one of her most iconic roles in Hollywood and the actress was the protagonist of the five movies of the saga.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

The idea of gathering a mercenary team formed by Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, the invisible man, Dr. Jekyll, and Dorian Gray to fight Fantom seemed really cool, but it wasn't. The film got terrible reviews and was, sadly, the last project of Sean Connery.

Picture: Twentieth Century Fox

Girl with a Pearl Earring

Scarlett Johansson, Cillian Murphy, and Colin Firth formed an impeccable triangle where love, jealousy, revenge, art, and some earrings would be the key in the history of the Netherlands Republic in 1665.

Intolerable Cruelty

To put George Clooney and Katherine Zeta-Jones against each other as divorce lawyers at the best time of their careers was absolutely genius; one of the best ideas of 2003.

Picture: Universal Pictures

Daredevil

Nobody could expect that Ben Affleck playing Matt Murdoch would not work; however, his Daredevil has been one of the most criticized movies in the superhero world.

Picture: Twentieth Century Fox

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

This wonderful comedy by Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey has become an all-time classic of the XXI century rom-com. Being too savvy to know, both of them will start falling in love despite their attempts to destroy their relationship.

City of God

Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund gifted us with a cruel but needed insight into the Brazilian favelas. In this action/drama movie, we get to know the story of two friends: Li'l Zé and Rocket. Real residents of the favelas participated in the movie which added a realistic touch.
