Superman: Legacy

We may have a little while to wait, but 2025 is bringing us a new Superman and Lois in James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy’. Although the movie will focus on a younger Man of Steel, according to Gunn himself, it will not be an origin story. As he told a fan: “We’ve seen his origin enough in film at this time!” So who is taking on this younger Superman role?

Who is the new Superman?

David Corenswet, 29, was born in Philadelphia and will step into Superman’s famous red and blue suit. He is best known for his role in ‘The Politician’ and also for his appearance in ‘House of Cards’.

And Lois?

Rachel Brosnahan is an award winning American actress, best known for playing the title role of an aspiring stand-up comedian in ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’.

Why change the actor?

For those of you who don’t know, D.C. has had a bit of a change in management and James Gunn has been made the boss. He is in charge of all upcoming movies.

He will direct the new film

The new Superman film 'Superman: Legacy' will be directed by the new head of DC Films. Gunn explains on X (Twitter): “A bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

A different type of Superman

James Gunn wanted a different kind of Superman from the previous darker Superman played by Henry Cavill. We know, thanks to Cavill’s social media that they had a meeting about his future in the DCU and that he had ‘bad news’ - he wouldn’t be portraying the role in the next Superman movie.

A lighter version perhaps?

Perhaps the director is going in a different direction casting an actress associated with comedy for the role of Lois Lane. Either way, the actor does look remarkably like ‘a superman’ which casting directors have told him before, making fans aware that he would be finally chosen for the role.

How does he compare with previous Superman actors?

Superman has been around for decades and has been portrayed by many different actors through the years. Some of them good and some of them great.

Henry Cavill

British actor Cavill is one of the few actors who have managed a good career in films and T.V. between outings as The Man of Steel. He is also still in contention for the new James Bond.

Christopher Reeve

For many, the one and only. Reeve starred in the first big-budget Hollywood version of Superman and a number of sequels. The image of him wearing the red cape is truly iconic

Brandon Routh

He had only one outing as The Man of Steel in the slightly uninspiring and gloomy 2006 Superman returns. He was chosen for his similar looks to the classic Christopher Reeve.

George Reeves

George Reeves was the original screen superman, playing him in the 1950’s T.V. series ‘The Adventures of Superman’. The actor died at the age of 45 under controversial circumstances.

Dean Caine

Caine played Superman in the light and friendly T.V. series ‘Lois and Clark’ in the 1990s.

Tom Welling

He starred as a young Superman in the smash hit TV series Smallville, running for 10 amazing years. However, we were never given the joy of seeing him wear the suit.

And what about Lois?

Lois Lane is a strong-willed independent reporter for The Daily Planet, who will stop at nothing for a good story and also happens to be in love with Superman.

Amy Adams

Adams starred opposite Henry Cavill in the darker films involving Superman and didn’t quite have the personality or humor of the previous Lois Lanes.

Margot Kidder

Playing opposite Christopher Reeve, Kidder was brilliant and combined humor and strength to bring Lois Lane to the big screen and into our hearts.

Kate Bosworth

There seemed to be so much wrong with 'Superman Returns,' so it was only natural that they should mess up the relationship between Lois and Clark. Having her in another relationship distanced herself from the film and Superman.

Teri Hatcher

The actress went on to big things after ‘Lois and Clark’ and brought humor and charm to Lois, not to mention her chemistry with Superman.

Erica Durance

This was a difficult one - Smallville showed Superman as a younger man but we all know Superman meets Lois at The Daily Planet… They still managed to put her in for a few seasons of the show, but Lois and Clark never had the spark that the young Clark had with Lana.

Certainly going to be a shake-up

In summary, we have pretty mixed emotions. We are excited to see a younger version of Superman (but not an ‘origin story’ or a high school version) but we are also certainly sad to see the captivating Henry Cavill exit the stage on the role of Superman. And for the new Lois Lane? Completely on board with a fresh feel for the role. We can’t wait to see what Rachel Brosnahan brings to the table.
