Selena Gomez under scrutiny about her appearance
After Selena Gomez appeared to be very thin on the red carpet of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, the actress and singer was the target of harsh criticism on social media.
Since her weight loss is noticeable compared to what she looked like last year, some commenters have said that perhaps Selena is on an extreme diet.
Others have suggested that she may be taking the (in)famous diabetes drug Ozempic. In addition to regulating blood sugar, it helps shed extra pounds.
At the 2025 SAG Awards, Selena looked stunning in an old Hollywood-style navy blue dress.
And although she had been looking thinner for months, it was at the recent awards ceremony that her new silhouette was most evident.
In the face of the criticism she has received, several celebrities and influencers have defended Selena. They highlight how problematic the comments about her weight are.
For example, influencer Alex Light made a post in which she compared the comments the singer received in 2024 and 2025. Last year, she was criticized for being overweight, and this year, she was attacked for losing her curves and looking too thin.

Actor Taylor Lautner, who was the actress's boyfriend years ago, shared the image posted by Alex Light on Instagram and wrote a message of support for his ex next to it.
"It's a cruel world full of hate out there. You can never please everyone, nor should you have to. In my experience, it doesn't make the words sting less; it just refocuses you onto what matters. And it sure isn't the shape, color, or appearance of your body…" Taylor Lautner wrote.
"…Daily reminder to all of us to not forget how beautiful you are inside and out… and be a little bit nicer," Taylor concluded his Instagram post.
TV host Alix Aspe shared the same image and said: "Please understand that you do not comment on other people’s bodies on any occasion, under any circumstances; never. Besides, nothing seems right to you."
Let's remember that Selena was diagnosed with lupus in 2013 and then had a kidney transplant in 2017. These conditions may well have caused fluctuations in her weight.
In November 2019, the singer told the 'Giving Back Generation' podcast: "I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me, that's when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff."
Selena, who is in the Oscar-nominated film 'Emilia Perez', has made it clear that she doesn't mind not having a slim figure. She says she just doesn't have that type of body, and that’s fine.
Aside from the mentioned illnesses, Glamour noted, Gomez was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018, which has caused her severe episodes of depression and panic attacks. This not only means that her medication may influence her weight. It also means that she is sensitive to criticism while having to manage numerous other issues every day.
Because of all of the above, the singer has tried to focus on her work and living happily with her family and fiancé, Benny Blanco. She works hard to leave aside the bad comments and have a positive self-image.
