From public's sweetheart to public enemy

In a matter of hours 'Emilia Pérez' went from a world embrace to keeping 'Perez' at arms length, but why?

Past tweets

The leading actress from the Oscar nominated musical has come under fire for past posts on social media and has led to many people cutting ties with the award winning actress.

Strong opinions

Karla Sofía Gascón posted some pretty heavy opinions on X/Twitter since 2016 and these posts have been unearthed and have bitten the Spanish actress right on her awards ceremony dream.

Absent from the Goya's

For the ceremony Karla Sofía Gascón was a noticeable absence probably because the distributor for the film, Netflix has also removed the actress from its promotional campaigns leading up to the Oscar awards ceremony

What was said?

Basically the actress who promotes tolerance and harmony said some pretty offensive things about China, Islam, black representation and police brutality. Leading not only Hollywood but other film communities to distance themselves from not only the actress but also the film.

The blame lies with the actress

If Roman Polanski's films can still win awards, surely Emilia Perez shouldn't be punished for one actor's comments. Let's not forget what a superb film it actually is.

Rewriting history

Emilia Pérez broke the record for an International film (non English language) with most nominations in Oscar history with an impressive 13 nods.

Best film nomination

Not only is Emilia Pérez nominated for best foreign film it is also nominated for the big prize of Best film. Putting it in the company of great films like 'Parasite' and 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'.

More big nominations

Not only is the best supporting actress on the list but so is the prize for best actress, fighting it out with the likes of Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres. However with the knowledge of Gascon's posts Demi Moore's odds of winning are now much improved.

Already acknowledged

Not only did it win the much desired Cannes jury prize but it also won 4 Golden globes. Besides anyone who can make the stunning Zoe Saldana look that unattractive deserves an award for best make up.

Four Golden Globes for ‘Emilia Pérez'

The Jacques Audiard musical won four Golden Globes out of a total of ten nominations in January 2025.

Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film

The film by the French director, won the prestigious Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

Music rewarded

Proof that its soundtrack is also pure quality, the film was also honoured with the award for Best Comedy or Musical, and Best Song (‘El Mal’, written by Clément Ducol and Camille).

Zoe Saldana takes centre stage

The most recent accolade was the Best Supporting Actress award for Zoe Saldana. The American-Dominican actress sparkled in the quartet she formed with Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz.

An original film

Acclaimed for its originality, ‘Emilia Pérez’ depicts the gender reassignment of a Mexican cartel boss on the run and the help he receives from a lawyer to achieve his plans.

First triumph at Cannes

Released in August 2024, the film was acclaimed at Cannes, where it won the Jury Prize and the Best Actress Award for the four lead actresses. Now it has won international acclaim! But has the public's love with the film been changed due to the leading actress and her past comments?

Oscar-nominated

‘Emilia Pérez' represents France in the Best International Feature Film category at this year's Oscars. The film consists of 3 different languages, Spanish, French and English.

A crazy gamble

For Ouest-France, which describes the final result as a cinematic ‘UFO’, it was ‘a daring gamble born of Jacques Audiard's boundless creativity’.

An explosive cocktail

‘Just think: a musical about an ultra-violent Mexican drug trafficker who wants to become a woman, starring Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña, shot in a Paris studio’, adds the publication.

More prizes to come?

Emilia Pérez’ was rewarded at the Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globes, but will it also win an Oscar? It would be a well-deserved honour for a film that is just as unique as it is daring.
