One of the most iconic disaster movies of the 90s

On July 1, 1998, fans began to get swept up in one of the most legendary disaster flicks of the decade. A massive meteor was hurdling toward the earth, and a select group of brave men, including Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck, were called upon to stop it.

Much more than a blockbuster

Not only did 'Armageddon' become the top-grossing movie of 1998, it ended up becoming much more than a blockbuster. Its cast, its soundtrack, its narrative, and everything that surrounded it turned it into an authentic pop culture icon.

The on-screen power couple of the year

What's more, the movie gave audiences one of the best on-screen couples of the 90s: Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler. Affleck played A.J., an oil driller turned astronaut who was madly in love with Tyler's character Grace. She also happened to be the daughter of A.J.'s boss, Harry Stamper, played by Bruce Willis.

Bruce Willis being Bruce Willis

Despite all the buzz around the movie, the legendary Bruce Willis went to the film's premiere in Cannes as if he were going to the beach, wearing shorts, polo shirt and a ball cap.

A fashion and celeb time capsule

'Armageddon' was totally of its time, and its premier acts as a perfect time capsule to examine the fashion trends and most popular celebs from the years running up to Y2K.

"I don't wanna close my eyes..."

Why not start with Aerosmith, the shadow stars of the film? The romantic ballad "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" that was made for the film became a smash success too. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song and became the only Aerosmith song to reach number 1 on the Billboard Top 100.

Gwyneth, Ben and Liv

Ben Affleck was Hollywood's "it" actor at the time, and this photo shows it. To his left, we have Liv Tyler, his partner in 'Armageddon.' To his right, Gwyneth Paltrow, his real-life partner who had just won an Oscar for 'Shakespeare in Love.'

Jennifer Lopez

Years before there was "Bennifer," here we have Jennifer Lopez looking fly at the 'Armageddon' premiere. She had just starred in the biopic 'Selena' but hadn't even released her debut album, which would come out just a year later.

Sean "Diddy" Combs

Known as Puff Daddy at the time, the rapper was famous for throwing the best parties in Hollywood in those days. Now, decades later, Diddy is being prosecuted and authorities view those parties in a very different light. In the photo, he wears a trendy basic white t-shirt just months before he starts an infamous relationship with Jennifer Lopez.

Garcelle Beauvais

Garcelle Beauvais was a huge star at the time for her role as 'Fancy' on 'The Jamie Foxx Show.' She was a common face to see at the year's top events and was a bit of a fashion icon. Here, she's sporting an asymmetrical dress, an obsession in the late 1990s.

Mimi Rogers

Mimi Rogers was a must at every big Hollywood event too. Really, the actress might just hold the record for red carpet attendance where she always gave off good vibes, magnetism and on-point looks. Here, she's giving a simple look that touches on many of the trends of the time.

Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe and Sheryl Berkoff had been married for seven years when 'Armageddon' came out. And now, they've exceeded three decades of happy marriage. But with Rob Lowe, it's hard to tell if that photo was from 1998 or 2023...the man has hardly changed.

Jerry and Linda Bruckheimer

The looks of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writer Linda Bruckheimer could almost be worn today. There's just one thing that is a surefire way to tell his photo was taken in the late 90s: the polarized glasses!

Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ben Affleck

Yes, it's Cuba Gooding Jr. chatting with Ben Affleck, perhaps explaining what it's like to win a best supporting actor Oscar.  Although pinstripe suits are very 1920s, they also made quite a revival in the late 1990s.

Ingo Rademacher

Ingo Rademacher is the prototype of a young actor from the '90s. His first role was as a surfer in 'Paradise Beach' (1993). He had a small role in the series 'Clueless' (1996), and later that year, he was hired to play Jax on the soap opera 'Days of Our Lives.'

Jessica Steen

Jessica Steen gave life to Lieutenant Jennifer Watts in 'Armageddon,' something that didn't stop her from rocking a tank top at the premier, which was a total late 90s trend.

Jason Isaacs and Emma Hewitt

While the name Jason Isaacs isn't huge, there's hardly a film that the versatile British actor hasn't appeared in. 'Armageddon,' however, kick-started his prolific career, even though the highly casual clothes he wore to the premier may not give an idea of its importance. Here, he's with his wife Emma Hewitt, who he's been with since 1998... a good year for Isaacs indeed.

Jodie Kidd and a fake astronaut

Here's supermodel Jodie Kidd in a super trendy slip dress, accessorized with an orange scarf to match the jumpsuits from the film.

Stuart Zender and Melanie Blatt

The names Stuart Zender and Melanie Blatt may not ring a bell for most people. What about their bands 'Jamiroquai' and 'All Saints?' Even if not, they were unquestionably two icons of 90s music.

Melanie Sykes

British TV presenter Melanie Sykes makes it clear that lingerie dresses were all the rage at the end of the 90s. The UK premier was held in the summer, so it also gave an opportunity to show off early summer tans/burns.

Shaznay Lewis

'All Saints' singer Shaznay Lewis was ahead of her time with this slick leather ensemble. It wasn't until 'The Matrix' premiered a year later, in 1999, that long leather jackets took off in the mainstream.
