Jason Derulo rose to fame in 2009 with the hits 'Whatcha Say' and 'In My Head.' Since then, he's accumulated hit songs, awards, TV appearances, and an infamous movie ... Do you know which one?

The name 'Derulo' comes from James' surname, Desrouleaux. The singer was born on September 21, 1989 in Florida with Haitian parents - hence the French name. You pronounce it as 'derulo', and that's why he called himself that as an artist.

Jason started out as a songwriter at a young age. Not only for himself, but for also for artists as big as Diddy, Lil Wayne, the girl group Danity Kane, and Cassie. Working on his own act, he won the finale of the programme 'Showtime at the Apollo' in 2006. He was only 17 at the time.

Jason Derulo says he was inspired by artists like Elvis Presley, Prince, Madonna, and Usher. His biggest influence, by far, was Michael Jackson. "He is the reason I am who I am today," Derulo told ABC's 'Greatest Hits'. "When I was 4 years old, I saw him for the first time. I saw how he moved the crowd and how people were just so touched." The singer is trying to make the same impact with his shows.

After releasing his first album in 2010, called 'Jason Derülo,' the artist went on tour as an opening act for no one less than Lady Gaga. In the meantime, his single 'Ridin' Solo' became another success with a number 2 in the UK Singles Chart, 4 in the Australian ARIA, and 9 in the US Billboard.

Jason Derulo's second album, 'Future History,' came out in 2011. It contained, among others, the number 1 single in the UK: 'Don't Wanna Go Home'. Given the enthusiasm of his British fans, Derulo decided to tour the UK in 2012 and book venues as large as Wembley stadium. Unfortunately, though, he broke his vertebrae and had to cancel the tour.

Apart from the accident, from which he recovered within months, Jason Derulo had it all. He was at the top of the charts on a regular basis, toured and recorded with the biggest stars, and he started going out with singer Jordin Sparks. They would be together from 2011 to 2014.

As he confessed to Ryan Seacrest on KIIS FM, the "pressures of marriage" in his relationship with Jordin Sparks were a problem to the singer - which is ironic because one of his hit singles was 'Marry Me.' As People magazine reported, Jason Derulo said: “I think it’ll be tough to perform a lot of different songs," considering they were often about Jordin. "But maybe it’ll be special in a different way because that was a huge time in my life."

The songs he was talking about, appeared on the album 'Tattoos' (2013), or 'Talk Dirty' in the US (2014). Inspired by events in his personal life, Derulo kept coming up with hit singles, like 'The Other Side' and 'Talk Dirty.' His next album, 'Everything is 4,' included the UK number 1 'Want to Want Me' in 2015.

The dancing skills of Jason Derulo did not go unnoticed. He hosted the Australian dancing competition 'Everybody Dance Now' with Kelly Rowland in 2012 and appeared as a guest judge in 'So You Think You Can Dance' in the US in 2014-2015.

After his high-profile relationship with Jordin Sparks, Jason Derulo went out with model Daphne Joy. They were together for six months. One of the problems of his romantic life, Derulo told People Magazine, was that he found it difficult to express his feelings while talking to his girlfriends. That's why he wrote Daphne a song when they split up. It's not clear whether any of the tracks released after their breakup came out of this song.

Since 'Everything is 4' (2015), Jason Derulo has not released any complete solo albums. He participated in collaborations with stars like Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, David Guetta, and Sofia Reyes (photo). In 2018, he made the official FIFA World Cup anthem 'Colors' with Colombian singer Maluma.

Jason Derulo has also been working on his influencer profile with popular social media accounts and on a fashion career as shoe designer and brand ambassador for LVL XIII. He's known on TikTok for his funny videos, which often star famous friends, and for showing off his latest clothing designs or fitness routines.

Altogether, social media and collaborations have made Jason Derulo a rich man. Forbes estimated his net worth at $14 million by the end of 2019, but the artist himself says it's much more than that. While refusing to reveal the real number, he states his fortune is "exponentially more" than 14 but less than 100 million.

In 2019, Jason Derulo stepped into a new world: Hollywood. His first movie was the musical 'Cats,' in which he shared the screen with big stars like Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, Idris Elba, and Ian McKellen. It was a big project and it promised to be an overwhelming success.

But then the trailer came out. It was the hottest topic on social media in the summer of 2019. And not in a good way. The 'digital fur technology,' used to project the famous actors' faces onto the bodies of sensual-looking cats, freaked out many viewers. The movie itself, later that year, got terrible reviews and flopped at the box office.

Jason Derulo was disappointed. About the critics, to be precise, not about the movie. "What the hell do they know?" he said about the reviewers. "Have they made a film ever in their life?" The singer/actor added in his rant to TMZ that "any time you defy what an art form is, any time you defy all rules, there's going to be some push-back. But it's an incredible piece of art done by some of the best people in the world."

After the professional failure of 'Cats' in 2019, Jason Derulo had better luck in 2020. His TikTok channel was really taking off, and he started making at least $75,000 per video there, the artist told Complex. Helped by the promotion of his music on TikTok, he scored a gigantic hit in the summer of 2020: 'Savage Love.' It reached number 1 in the UK, Australia, and the US, among others.

It was not an undivided success, though. Soon after he released the song, music fans claimed he had stolen a sample for 'Savage Love' from New Zealand producer Jawsh 685. In the end, Derulo got permission from the producer to use the sample. The song was re-released as 'Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat)' to acknowledge the work of both artists.

On a personal level, 2020 was also a good year for Derulo. While going to the gym, he met his current girlfriend, the model Jena Frumes. It was right before the COVID-19 pandemic took over the world. Jason and Jena have the same birthday (she's four years younger than him), and they are both passionate about working out and perfecting their bodies.

Soon enough, Jena started appearing in Derulo's TikTok and Instagram posts. They were either working out or making out during the quarantine in his Tarzana, California mansion.

The couple developed their relationship in front of an incredibly large audience. Besides their millions of followers on Instagram, the singer's TikTok profile has a whopping 58 million fans and more than 1 billion views.

Jena was born in New Jersey, studied theatre and dance in college, and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as an actress. She made viral comedy skits on Vine and showed off her smashing looks. After she appeared on Nick Cannon's comedy show 'Wild N' Out' in 2017, Jena became mostly known as a fitness model on Instagram.

British soccer fans may know Jena from the time she dated Manchester United player Jesse Lingard, here on a selfie with the model. American football fans, on the other hand, may remember her from the time she went out with Pittsburg Steeler player Antonio Brown. It was a controversial relationship because Brown left his pregnant girlfriend for Jena and eventually returned to his longtime partner.

The affair with Antonio Brown left "a sour taste in the model's mouth," The Sun reported. But Jena continued to work on her life in Los Angeles and her dream of becoming an actress. In early 2020, she met her current lover Jason Derulo in a gym. They immediately got very close.

Helped by the forced proximity of coronavirus lockdowns, the couple became serious within months. They are regular TikTok and Instagram buddies and even made a classic Christmas portrait together with Jena's dog Ice, all dressed in 'ugly' seasonal sweaters.
