The best way to spend the weekend

Ah, family movie night; what a nice way to kick off the weekend, right? Well, if your kids are making you watch Frozen or the Incredibles for the 50th time, or fighting over the options, family movie night can become quite the nightmare!

A film for each week of the year

Fret not, dear parents, because we have the solution! We have made a list of 52 films that the whole family will enjoy, old and young! Many of them are classics from the 80s and 90s that the kids will never have heard of. Now you have a film for each week of the year.

Matilda (1998)

This film is funny and engaging; who doesn't love to see a child getting back at her horrible parents?
Overall very family-friendly, although there are a few suspenseful scenes some young kids may find intense.

Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

This stop motion film is awesome! The fast pace of the film helps to keep the kids from getting bored!

Back to the Future (1985)

This cult classic is good from around 7 years old and up. Overall it is good, clean, fun; the only "complicated" scene is when Buzz tries to take advantage of Michael J Fox's mom.

Honey I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

You loved it when you were a kid, and so will they. You will probably end up having to watch the whole saga!

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

Robin Williams at his finest with plenty of slapstick comedy. There really isn't anything inappropriate or scary, so a great film for all!

Muppets Treasure Island (1996)

This is a favorite at our house; the Muppets are always a hit!

Big (1988)

Little kids might get a bit bored with this one, probably better for 7 and up. Older kids will enjoy the concept of a kid living an adult life and having the coolest job EVER!

The Parent Trap (1998)

This sweet and funny family film was Lindsay Lohan's breakout into stardom. Without a doubt, it is a family film classic!

Freaky Friday (2003)

Another classic Lindsay Lohan film that the whole family will enjoy. The concept of switching bodies with a parent is just too irresistible!

Yes Day (2021)

This Netflix will get the whole gang laughing! Be warned though, your kids might want a 'Yes Day' of their own afterward!

The Harry Potter Saga (2001-2011)

We all know and love Harry Potter. For the youngest in the house, don't go past the first three films; they get darker and scarier as they go on.

Ghostbusters (1984)

In the 80s, the special effects caused some of us kids to have nightmares, but nowadays, the kids don't find the ghosts in the film scary at all. Perfect for ages 6 and up.

The Princess Bride (1987)

This is a cult classic; if you love your children, just watch it with them already!

Benji (1974) (2018)

Everyone loves a heart-warming dog story. You can go with the classic from 1974 or the modern version; either way, a guaranteed hit!

Gremlins (1984)

Little kids might find this film too scary, but they should be fine from 8 years and up. Another cult classic that you'll enjoy re-watching with your family.

School of Rock (2003)

Jack Black is always hilarious, and your kids will enjoy his humor too.

Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory (2005)

We enjoy Tim Burton's take of the classic Roald Dahl story; the older version of the film from the '70s probably won't capture your kids' attention as well.

The Diary of A Wimpy Kid (2010)

The Wimpy Kid films are very humorous, and if your kid has been reading the books, they will be very excited to see the films.

Star Wars Saga (1977-1983)

Appropriate for ages 7 and up, you simply have to share the classic trilogy with the offspring: consider it part of your kids' education.

The Big Green (1995)

A cute story about an underdog team, full of laughs, and great for the whole family.

Casper (1995)

With Bill Pullman and Cristina Ricci leading the way, 'Casper' is the perfect mix of spooky and funny. It is just scary enough for the little kids and funny enough to keep the older members of the family entertained.

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985)

If you watched 'Pee Wee's Playhouse' as a kid, you should check out this film. It is fun to see your children's reaction to Pee Wee; he is such an off-the-wall character!

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)

Another film that is a MUST see! Just be careful if your kids are very sensitive, as there are more than a few intense, heart-wrenching moments. Otherwise, it is probably fine for the 7 and up crowd.

Hook (1991)

Nearly any family film with Robin Williams is going to be a hit! The kids will enjoy the story of Peter Pan, and you can enjoy the amazing cast: Dustin Hoffmann, Julia Roberts, and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others.

Home Alone (1990)

If you loved this film as a kid, chances are your kids will too! Filled with plenty of slapstick comedy, Home Alone will get everyone laughing!

Elf (2003)

Really young kids could potentially get a bit bored with 'Elf,' but from 6 years and up, you should be fine. Will Ferrell is just too funny in this Christmas classic.

Uncle Buck (1989)

Keep the TV remote handy, there is at least one scene that might be a bit too racy for the youngest members of the household, but that is what fast forward is for! Otherwise, this classic is great for a laugh!

Look Who's Talking (1989)

As with Uncle Buck, a wee bit racy, but worth the risk! Fast forward through the opening credits if you don't want to have to explain how babies are made! After that, it is smooth sailing, and the film is otherwise family-safe.

Paddington (2014)

Both of the Paddington movies are great, and all ages should enjoy them.

The Sandlot (1993)

Another 90s classic, if you missed it the first time around when you were a kid, you will enjoy discovering it with your own children.

The Little Rascals (1994)

Squeaky clean fun, not scary at all, a safe bet to watch even with little kids.

Aceventura Pet Detective (1994)

A great film to watch with kids ages 8 and up. There are one or two racy scenes, but nothing too bad.

Babe (1995)

A pig that acts like a dog?! What's not to love?

Free Willy (1993)

Be careful; your kids may become obsessed with killer whales after seeing this film. You've been warned!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)

An 80's classic mixes mystery with lots of wackiness and the kids will enjoy mixing it up with a different film style.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1994)

Some of Tim Burton's finest work, and it should definitely be shared with the whole family. Despite its dark appearance, this film is fine for ages 6 and up.

Jumanji (1995)

Before you show your kids the newest Jumanji movie, show them this classic with Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst.

George of the Jungle (1997)

Silly jokes and adventure, and not scary at all. Perfect for watching with kids of mixed ages.

Cool Runnings (1993)

Based on a true story, this movie is funny and heart-warming. Perfect for family movie night.

Bedtime Stories (2008)

An Adam Sandler film you can watch with your kids? What more do you want?!

The Addams Family (1991)

Creepy but not too creepy, a perfect film to enjoy at Halloween!

Homeward Bound (1993)

For all the animal lovers out there, this one is a must. Keep the tissues nearby!

The Goonies (1985)

Yet another 80s cult classic. 'The Goonies' can get a little dark, and there are a few scenes that may not be suitable for younger viewers. From age 9 or 10, you should be in the clear.

Dr. Dolittle (1998)

Eddie Murphy talking to animals, you know you are all going to be cracking up!

Annie (2014)

This modern take on Annie is fun and more palatable for youngsters than the classic film.

Flubber (1997)

This film is wacky, and Robin Williams is, as always, hilarious.

Hugo (2011)

It was directed by Martin Scorsese and produced by Johnny Depp, and with a star-studded cast, including Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Christopher Lee, and Jude Law. Definitely worth a watch!

Daddy Day Care (2003)

Eddie Murphy is at it again, cracking us up while running a day care. Everyone will be laughing, guaranteed.

The Karate Kid (2010)

We recommend the 2010 version rather than the original, as it is more suited to younger audiences.

Jurassic Park (1993)

With this film, be careful about younger kids; maybe the safest bet would be 10 and up; it just depends on how easily your children get scared.

Space Jam (1996)

Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny are the stars of this film. Need we say more?

Spy Kids (2001)

The storyline is pretty decent in this film, and if you and the kids get hooked, there are more 'Spy Kids' films in the saga.
