Love and controversy

Between 2012 and 2019 this pair was one of the most followed, toxic, and controversial couples in Hollywood. In fact, this misguided love story even involved the police. This is what Evan Peters and Emma Roberts' relationship was like.

'Adult World'

The couple met on the set of 'Adult World' back in 2012. Emma Roberts was 21 years old and fell under the spell of Evan Peters, who had just turned 25. Nothing happened between them until the filming was over. "I was trying to flirt with him but he literally didn't speak to me the whole shoot. He thought I was weird," Emma Roberts told Chelsea Handler in 2014.

Evan took the plunge

After the shoot, as the actress confirmed, it was Evan Peters who took the next step. "He sent me a message, we met up and started a relationship". In July 2012, the rumours started to fly, after they were seen together and very affectionate at a wedding.

It took months

Although they were spotted on several occasions together that year, it wasn't until January 2013 that they made their first appearance as a couple, at the Golden Globes red carpet.

Rising stars

At the time, both actors' careers were just taking off and they already had a name in the industry. Evan Peters had been in 'Kick-Ass' and was about to play Peter Maximoff in 'X-Men', while Emma Roberts had been in the fourth 'Scream' (pictured here with Hayden Panettiere).

'American Horror Story'

But Emma Roberts' big breakthrough came with Madison Montgomery, her role in the third season of Ryan Murphy's 'American Horror Story: Coven'. Evan Peters was already one of the stars of the anthology, since the first season. The actor has been in 9 seasons of the series, while Emma Roberts has done 5 of them.

Normalising the relationship

Obviously, working together was not a problem and they proved it over the years, becoming one of Hollywood's favourite couples. In fact, it was common to see them together on the streets of Los Angeles as a normal, everyday couple.

The Montreal Incident

But on 7 July 2013, everything went wrong. Emma Roberts was arrested in Montreal (Canada) and accused of domestic assault against Evan Peters, according to TMZ. TMZ reported that someone called the police after hearing an argument between the couple in a Montreal hotel. When they arrived, the actor was bleeding from the nose and had a bite mark.

What happened in that hotel?

Emma Roberts was released from custody because Evan Peters did not press charges against her. However, sources close to the actress contacted TMZ to say that both were to blame.

'Dramatic and heated'

Someone close to the couple told US Weekly that the pair would not break up, saying that Emma Roberts "is very dramatic and gets heated during arguments, but they're not going to break up. When they're good, they're madly in love".

Forgetting and healing

And so it continued. Soon after, images were leaked of Emma Roberts being comforted by a bruised Evan Peters, whose nose and hand were visible. Obviously, neither of them made any reference to the altercation. Their representatives called it a "misunderstanding".

Coven therapy

Between July 2013 and January 2014 the couple filmed 'American Horror Story: Coven' together, in what seemed like perfect couple therapy. They looked good and happy. So much so, that at the end of filming, Evan Peters asked Emma Roberts to marry him. She said yes.

First break-up

In an interview with People, Evan Peters acknowledged how important it was to have Emma Roberts on set. "You're on set in a city you don't know and it's nice to have your best friend there". But the official engagement never actually came because in June 2015, the couple split for the first time.

First reconciliation

Just three months later, the couple were seen again at a shopping mall in Los Angeles. What was going on? Yes, they had reconciled and seemed happier than ever. However, we had to wait until 17 March for the official confirmation, via the actress's Instagram.

Second break-up

But, in May 2016, the second break-up came. Evan Peters deleted all trace of Emma Roberts from Instagram, while the actress was spotted with Christopher Hines, a documentary filmmaker, People confirmed.

I love to hate you

At the same time, 'Empty Lighthouse' revealed the feud between Emma Roberts and Lea Michele on the set of 'Scream Queens', claiming that the rest of the crew couldn't stand their diva status. Interesting to note, the two are now good friends, so many suspect that it may have been a promotional stunt.

Second reconciliation

The summer went by and in September 2016, Emma Roberts was seen again with Evan Peters, two months later, they were seen kissing in the street. Christopher Hines? Who? In January 2017, there was new confirmation of the reconciliation - a romantic birthday greeting from Emma Roberts to Evan Peters and, soon after, a new engagement. Obviously, it didn't come to fruition either.

Third time's the charm (or curse)

It was in March 2019 when the couple called it quits for good. If second parts are never good, third parts are even less so. That same month, the actress was spotted with actor and musician Garrett Hedlund, and she became pregnant a year later.

Seven intermittent years (for now)

The awkward moment came in October 2019, when the former couple met at the 100th episode celebration of 'American Horror Story' and unashamedly kept their distance, making it clear that there would be no fourth reconciliation. But never say never...
