Famous American bands whose members hated each other
They defined American music history, but they didn't exactly get along. From The Ramones to the Smashing Pumpkins, here are some bands that suffered from infighting. Some separated, others physically attacked each other, and a few even sued their bandmaten.
This punk band was from Queens, New York, and mostly played from the 70s through the 90s. There was a great political divide within the group: On the one hand, there was Johnny, a conservative republican, and on the other, Joey, a liberal and a democrat. They obviously clashed. But things got worse when Johnny married Linda Danielle, Joey's ex-girlfriend, in 1984.
Joey's hatred was channeled into a new song: 'The KKK Took My Baby Away'. Things were so bad between the two that Johnny didn't even attend Joey Ramone's funeral in 2001. Three years later, he would also die, of prostate cancer.
Of course, Linda Danielle was said to be the Yoko Ono of 'The Ramones'. In the book 'On the Road With The Ramones', Joey assured that the day his brother stole his girlfriend "he destroyed their relationship and the band."
The Californian rock band Blink 182 has been popular since the beginning of the 21st century thanks to their pop-punk sound and cool music videos. However, the artists' egos got in the way.
Bassist Mark Hoppus wanted to do something more dance alternative, while guitarist Tom DeLong was inclined to a more hardcore sound. After their hit album 'Blink 182', they released two more, but they didn't reach the same success.
The band also declined because Tom DeLong quit music to study UFOs. However, there's a happy ending because in 2022 the band got back together and organized a world tour for 2023 and 2024.
This alternative rock band from Boston was formed in 1986 and plays together to this day. Songs like 'Where Is My Mind?' and 'Here Comes Your Man' are now part of music history.
Beneath the success, their frontman, Black Francis, and their bassist, Kim Deal, didn't get along. Kim Deal felt that he was undermined by Black Francis, who had the creative control of the band. The bass player ended up founding 'The Breeders' with her twin sister when the 'Pixes' ended in 1993. However, Kim Deal joined the band again for a reunion tour in 2004 and continued with the 'Pixies' until 2013.
D'arcy Wretzky is one of the most respected bassists of alternative rock of the 90s. She defined the sound of the Smashing Pumpkins but left the group anyway due to her bad relationship with lead singer Billy Corgan.
The artist revealed to Rolling Stone that "Billy's controlling nature" was the reason she got out of the group. It is well-known that the leader of the band was very meticulous about his job. In recent years, they went back on tour, but she never joined the band again.
Billy Corgan also spoke to Rolling Stone. He had another version of the story. According to Corgan, guitarist James Iha (right in the photo) was responsible for the breakup.
Yet, Corgan also had some really nasty words to say about D'arcy Wretzky: "Did it help that D'arcy Wretzky was fired for being an addict who refused to get help? No, that did not help to maintain the band together at all."
