The growing celebrity revolt against Joe Biden's continued campaign
"I’m a lifelong Democrat," wrote the A-list actor and top Democratic fundraisers, beginning his essay for the New York Times. "I love Joe Biden... I consider him a friend, and I believe in him... But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time."
Clooney continues, saying that the Biden he saw at a fundraiser was the same man at the debate, a diminished form of his past self. "This is about age. Nothing more... We are not going to win in November with this president," he wrote, urging the president to step aside and for the Democrats to hold a convention to find another candidate. "Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024."
After US President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance came extreme nervousness in the Democratic party. Now, some high profile politicians and pundits are suggesting that he is simply too old to beat Donald Trump… or run a country. Of course, celebrities, besides Clooney, are weighing in on the issue. Most are revolting against their president, but some remain steadfast supporters...
"I don't care if he's p**ped his pants. I don't care if he can't put a sentence together," the cohost of ABC's 'The View' said on her show. "Show me he can't do the job and then I'll say, okay, maybe it's time to go…. I have p00py days all the time… Now, I'm not running the world, but I don't know anybody who doesn't step in stuff at some point."
But Goldberg's support is rare. Also on 'The View,' actor Michael Douglas, who has been a longtime supporter of Joe Biden and even hosted a Hollywood fundraiser for the president in April, said he's "deeply, deeply concerned," about Biden's ability to get re-elected. "“This is such a tough one. I adore the guy.... especially it’s difficult because the Democrats have a big bench, they’ve got a lot of heavy hitters, a lot of talent." He said he understood Clooney's point of view.
Meanwhile, many of the daytime talk show's co-hosts called for Biden to step down. "It kind of pains me to say this today, but I think President Biden needs to step down and be replaced if we want to defeat Donald Trump in November," said Sara Haines after the debate, but still clarified she would vote for Biden if that were the choice. Sunny Hostin agreed, while Ana Navarro said she's "not giving up on Biden."
Filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner made waves on X (formerly Twitter) after stating, "It's time to stop 'eff -ing'around. If the Convicted Felon wins, we lose our Democracy. Joe Biden has effectively served the US with honor, decency, and dignity. It's time for Joe Biden to step down."
The 'High Fidelity' actor, not known for hiding his political opinions, reposted Reiner's message and added, "There has been no bigger supporter of Biden's domestic policy than Rob - he's right."
In the latest episode of 'The Daily Show,' Jon Stewart didn’t go as far as calling for Biden to step down, but asked: "Can’t we open up the conversation? Do you understand the opportunity here? Do you have any idea how thirsty Americans are for any hint of inspiration or leadership and a release from this choice of a megalomaniac and a suffocating gerontocracy?”
The 'Bowling for Columbine' director took to his Rumble podcast to express his concerns, calling Biden's campaign a form of "elder abuse" and highlighting the distress Biden showed during the debate. "Would you have seriously even let him go out on that stage? Who would send an 81-year-old out onto any stage to debate a living monster at nine o'clock at night for a brawl that would not end until 10:42 p.m.?" he asked.
The renowned horror author wrote on X, "Joe Biden has been a fine president, but it's time for him - in the interests of the America he so clearly loves - to announce he will not run for re-election."
The massive Hollywood agent and Democratic donor hinted that more Democratic donors might withdraw support. Emanuel said at the Aspen Institute’s Ideas Festival, "And maybe the only way this gets - with smart lawyers looking at it - is if the money starts drying up… But if this is, as Biden says, the fight for our democracy... man, he gave us a bunch of malarkey."
Emanuel may be right. Activist Abigail Disney, great-niece of Walt Disney, told CNBC she will not donate to the Democratic Party unless Biden is replaced, expressing certainty that the Democrats will lose if Biden remains the nominee."Biden is a good man and has served his country admirably, but the stakes are far too high," she said.
The Emmy-winning screenwriter wrote an essay Deadline urging Democrats to stop donating unless Biden steps aside, emphasizing that a change in leadership is crucial to avoid a significant electoral loss. "When they text you asking for cash, text back that you're not giving them a penny and you won't change your mind until there's change at the top of the ticket."
And then there's former President Barack Obama - currently a producer of Netflix programs with his wife Michelle. He is one of the most high-profile figures who has spoken out in support of Biden.
"Bad debate nights happen. Trust me, I know," Obama said in a post on X. "But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself."
