The third child of King Charles XVI Gustav of Sweden and Queen Silvia, Madeleine of Sweden was born on 10 June 1982 at Drottningholm Castle. She is eighth in line to the Swedish throne.

After spending her entire school career in Sweden, Princess Madeleine left to study English in London in Autumn 2001. A year later, she enrolled at Stockholm University to study art history. She went on to take courses in ethnology, modern history and child psychology.

In August 2009, the princess announced her engagement to Swedish lawyer Jonas Bergström, with whom she had been in a relationship for almost seven years. However, the wedding never took place. After learning of her partner's infidelities, Madeleine of Sweden broke off her engagement in April 2010.

Devastated and heartbroken, she decided to move back across the Atlantic to New York, this time to work for the World Childhood Foundation, founded in 1999 by her mother, Queen Silvia. A foundation to which she remains deeply committed to this day.

Madeleine of Sweden and Christopher O'Neill were married on 8 June 2013 in front of almost 500 guests, a mix of royalty and socialites. The wedding took place in the chapel of the Royal Palace in Stockholm, and the princess wore a magnificent wedding dress by Valentino.

In 2019, King Charles XVI Gustav of Sweden decided to withdraw the titles of Royal Highness from the children of Madeleine of Sweden and Carl Philip in order to restrict the number of people responsible for representing the Swedish crown within the royal family, but also for financial reasons. The King's grandchildren were nevertheless able to keep their titles of Duke and Duchess, granted by their grandfather when they were born.
