An incredible 12 out of the top grossing films so far are either sequels or part of a franchise. With Deadpool and Wolverine having exploded on to our screens at the end of July, it just goes to show the lack of originality in Hollywood at the moment isn't affecting the box office takings..

The highest-grossing films

Which ones have you seen, which ones do you want to see and which ones couldn't you care less about? Let's check out which films are putting bottoms on seats and money in the bank.

Inside Out 2

Gross - $1,523,900 billion - It was one of Pixar's most popular films, but no one expected the arrival of Puberty and Co. to push its gross to over $1 billion.

Deadpool and Wolverine

Only released on July 26th, but this superb team up has already taken $824.1 million worldwide (as of 5th August 2024) and it's only just getting started. Forbes think it will surpass the $1bn mark.

Dune: Part Two

Gross - $712 million - Denis Villeneuve's magnum opus has taken the box office by storm and threatens to do the same at the Oscars. A spectacular revision of the 80s classic, despite a moody Timotheé Chalamet.

Despicable Me 4

Still in cinemas, Gru and The Minions have managed a staggering $686,657,353 world wide and you can be sure it hasn't finished yet.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Box office - $568 million - Two giant monsters fighting each other, cool. Two giant monsters teaming up to fight another monster just as big? It rocks.

Kung Fu Panda 4

Box office - 544 million dollars - With Po on his way to becoming Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, it was time to find an apprentice, which means that the circle is closed, but not completely, because, looking at the box office, a fifth instalment could be on its way.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Gross - $392 million - The saga has been running for more than half a century and looks set to continue to do so if it is extended any further.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Gross - 333 million dollars - The bromance of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence is top Hollywood. It's also noticeable that it's been 30 years since the first instalment, but audiences loved the new film.

A Quiet Place: Day One

Now a franchise and the latest one is a prequel as the title suggests. So far this film has taken 255,156,796 dollars and should be around for a bit longer as it was only released at the end of June.

Twisters

30 years after the original a new generation of storm chasers embark on a dangerous journey with mother nature. Pulling in $235,142,165 since its release on July 17th.

The Garfield Movie

Gross - $240 million - Really, no one knew how Garfield would perform in the cinema, but it has performed better than expected. Let there be no doubt that there will be more of the lasagna-eating cat coming our way.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

Box office - 202 million dollars - Little by little, the Ghostbusters are back and, for this film, with a changing of the guard. Not a bad return with a more or less estimable box office.

IF

Gross - $185 million - A pleasant surprise for anyone who has ever had an imaginary friend. Ryan Reynolds is still in fine form, turning everything he touches into gold.

Photo: Paramount Pictures

Bob Marley: One Love

Box office - $179 million - The King of Reggae is a legend and this biopic has surprised fans and newcomers, giving an insight into the late great Marley music.

The Fall Guy

Gross - $175 million - This romantic comedy deserved more love. Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling give us pure on-screen chemistry, but even they didn't make the film profitable.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Gross - $171 million - If we think that Furiosa had a budget of $168 million, not counting promotion, we can take it as a box office failure. That doesn't take away from the fact that it's enjoyable and that Anya Taylor-Joy is a tremendous Furiosa.

The Beekeeper

Box office - $153 million - A classic: Jason Statham delivering the goods, a $40 million investment, some promotion and grossing four times that amount. Now that's good business.

Civil War

Gross - $122 million - A24's most expensive film in history has turned a profit and, what's more, has a chance of sweeping the Oscars.

Mean Girls

Box office - 104 million dollars - It was difficult to bet on this reboot, but it did very well at the box office.

Photo: Paramount Pictures

Madame Web

Gross - 100 million dollars - One of the biggest disappointments of the year, especially for Sony, which budgeted 100 million dollars for this film.

Photo: Sony Pictures

Exhuma

Raised - $98 million - Unexpected South Korean gem revolving around the transfer of a sarcophagus that goes awry.

Argylle

Box office - 96 million dollars - 200 million budget, plus the investment in marketing, make 'Argylle' one of the biggest flops in history. We actually quite enjoyed it.

Detective Conan: The Million-Dollar Pentagram

Gross - $95 million

Gōshō Aoyama's manga continues to fascinate, both in comics and Anime. His latest film has taken them both by storm.
