Most searched on Google in 2021

The year is coming to a close and it's time to take stock. There's no better indication of what was on our minds this year than the global top searches on Google.

Among the most searched events of 2021 was a deadly incident involving a famous Hollywood star. The name 'Alec Baldwin' was typed into the search engine quite a lot. However, other searches were even bigger on a global scale.

Sports searches

Sports are often the most searched on Google. In 2021, specifically, two cricket matches at the highest level were the most Googled events in the world: Australia vs India and India vs England. They were followed by the IPL (Indian Premier League).

Cricket, NBA and soccer

NBA, Euro 2021 and Copa América also top off the rankings in worldwide Google searches. They show that sports are king on Google.

News

Other top searches involve the news, such as the terms 'Afghanistan' and 'AMC Stock'. It is curious that 'COVID Vaccine' only occupies the third place among the news searches in a year that was dominated by waves of the coronavirus pandemic.

Cryptos, aid and hurricanes

Dogecoin, GME Stock, Stimulus Check, Georgia Senate Race and Hurricane IDA complete the ranking of the most looked-for news topics throughout 2021.

Actors and actresses

As usual, Hollywood has a large presence on Google. Actors and actresses involved in controversies always monopolize the top positions. This is how Alec Baldwin, Pete Davidson and Aryan Khan came to occupy the podium of honor for the most popular artists in the search engine.

Layoffs, new babies and controversy

Gina Carano, Armie Hammer, Carmen Salinas, Shehnaaz Gill, Elliot Page, Dave Chappelle, and Brenda Song are next on this list of curious celebrities.

Films

When it comes to movies, superheroes continue to dominate the Google searches, with 'Eternals' and 'Black Widow' leading the way and 'Dune' earning a creditable bronze.

Superheroes, monsters and zombies

Shang Chi, Red Alert, Mortal Kombat, Cruella, Halloween Kills, Godzilla vs. Kong and Army of the Dead are the next movies that users have searched the most on Google.

Series

If one thing is clear in the ranking of most Googled series of the year, it is that Netflix has dominated 2021 with solvency. 'Squid Game' and 'Bridgerton' have been the most popular drama series on Google, followed by Disney+ hit 'WandaVision'.

Netflix, thieves and Marvel

Cobra Kai, Loki, Sweet Tooth, Lupine, Ginny and Georgia, True Beauty and BBB21 (Big Brother Brazil) are also among the most searched on Google in 2021.

Athletes

What happens to actors, also happens to athletes: they are Googled most when they are in the midst of a controversy. Christian Eriksen was the most Googled athlete of this year after he suffered a heart attack in the middle of the European soccer championship. He is followed by Tiger Woods, who had a car accident, and Simone Biles, who dropped out of the Olympics and testified against her abuser.

Eriksen, and then the rest

Emma Raducanu, Henry Ruggs III, Neeraj Chopra, Shohei Ohtani, Odell Beckham Jr., Rafael Nadal and Tyson Fury round out this eclectic Top 10

Famous people

Obviously, the celebrities in Google's top searches are mostly actors, actresses and athletes. Alec Baldwin sits at the top, followed by Kyle Rittenhouse, who's obviously not an artist or athlete but an American vigilante acquitted in a homicide case. Then come Christian Eriksen, Tiger Woods and Simone Biles.

Biden, athletes and actors

Joe Biden is also in the ranking of most-searched celebrities, followed by Emma Raducanu, Derek Chauvin, Henry Ruggs III and Pete Davidson.

Sport clubs

Curiously, and despite the success of cricket and basketball in the sports rankings, it is soccer that completely dominates the ranking of the most Googled teams. Real Madrid, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are in the top three positions, ahead of Barcelona and Palmeiras.

Soccer, NBA, and more soccer

You have to wait for the sixth place to see the legendary Lakers enter the list. Corinthians, Boston Red Sox, Sao Paulo and Manchester City close the top 10 of most wanted sports clubs.

Songs

And what about music? It happens that 'Drivers License' (Olivia Rodrigo), 'Call Me By Your Name' (Lil Nas X), 'Industry Baby' (Lil Nas X feat Jack Harlow), 'Fancy Like' (Walker Hayes) and 'MAPA' (SB19) were the most Googled songs in the world during 2021.

Olivia, Montero and the rest

'Good 4 u' (Olivia Rodrigo), 'Butter' (BTS), 'Jalebi Baby' (Tesher), 'Wellerman' (Nathan Evans) and 'Good Days' (SZA) also enter the Top 10 songs on Google.

Deceased

And finally, there's famous people who left us. DMX, Gabby Petito and Marília Mendonça were the deceased celebrities that generated the most searches in 2021.

Music, film and television

Prince Philip, Brian Laundrie, MC Kevin, Lázaro Barbosa de Sousa, Peter R. de Vries, Paulo Gustavo and Helen McCrory complete the saddest ranking of Google searches.
