What happened to Alicia Silverstone?

The fan-loved movie 'Clueless' hit cinemas nearly three decades ago, but there's more to the career of Alicia Silverstone. Let's revisit her path through Hollywood and answer a burning question: Where's Alicia Silverstone now?

Alicia Silverstone made her debut in 'The Wonder Years'

Born in San Francisco (California) in 1976, Alicia Silverstone was already a youth idol by the age of 17. At first, she starred in small TV and commercial roles, but then she broke through in 1992 with the era's most successful television series: 'The Wonder Years.'

What happened to Alicia Silverstone?

After a breakthrough in the 1990s, the star disappeared almost completely. What happened? Here's the story of a career with ups and downs.

Daughter of a former flight attendant

Young Alicia Silverstone grew up in a traditional Jewish family in Hillsborough, California. Her father, Monty Silverstone, was a real estate agent, and her mother was a flight attendant.

Alicia Silverstone as an ambitious child star

As a young girl, Alicia Silverstone told her mother: "I want to be an artist." She began modeling in small children's fashion shows, then starred in the occasional TV commercial and series, and finally got a substantial role in 'The Crush.' She played Darian Forrester in the 1993 film.

Alicia Silverstone and the Aerosmith video trilogy

Alicia Silverstone is often remembered as the protagonist of the Aerosmith video trilogy 'Cryin,' 'Amazing,' and 'Crazy' (1993-94).

Big success with 'Clueless'

While more and more people began to recognize her face, Alicia Silverstone starred in a couple of movies. Her greatest hit would come in 1995: 'Clueless'.

Teen idol in the '90s

'Clueless' also featured a young Paul Rudd and a very young Brittany Murphy. They say the director, Amy Heckerling, chose Alicia to be the main character after seeing her in the Aerosmith video clips.

A multi-million dollar contract

The 'Clueless' hype made Alicia Silverstone a star with a multi-million dollar ($10 million) contract for several films with Columbia-TriStar.

The beginning of the end

This contract, some media say, was the beginning of the end for Alicia Silverstone's career, After she signed it, one movie after another flopped miserably.

Alicia Silverstone as 'The Babysitter'

One of the first movies, 'The Babysitter', did not perform that badly. The thriller drew a reasonable crowd but the public seemed less excited about Alicia Silverstone than before. The actress was about to turn 20 and seemed to be at a turning point in her career already.

Alicia Silverstone in 'Batman & Robin'

It was with the film 'Batman & Robin,' Vanity Fair says, that everything went south. Alicia Silverstone starred in that movie with George Clooney and Chris O'Donnell. It made her one of the best-paid young actresses of the moment. But it also ruined her reputation.

Batgirl: fat-shamed

The movie was supposed to be a stepping stone to a career of blockbusters. But Alicia Silverstone struggled with weight issues during the shoot and was fat-shamed by the audience and her colleagues. "Because of her radical weight changes," crew members told Vanity Fair, "we had to design several Batgirl outfits in different sizes. The actress was nicknamed Fat-Girl."

The lowest point in her professional career

Suddenly, the 20-year-old blonde and innocent girl was no longer a wanted actress. For her roles in 'Batman & Robin' and 'Excess Baggage,' she received the worst reviews of her career.

Alicia Silverstone: Lights and shadows

Other titles appeared, such as 'Blast from the Past,' 'Love's Labor's Lost,' and even a television series, 'Miss Match,'  for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe. Still, none of them succeeded in reviving the career of a young actress who was no longer among the public's favorites.

Her love life

Personally, though, Alicia Silverstone found happiness in those years. The actress had a stable relationship with her lifelong boyfriend, musician Christopher Jarecki, whom she married at an intimate celebration at Lake Tahoe in June 2005.

Alicia Silverstone in 'Scooby-Doo'

Alicia Silverstone tried to save her career by stringing together minor projects in theater and television. She also signed roles in commercial films such as 'Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed.'

Vegetarian Fighting Flag

But Alicia Silverstone's true passion went into other things than acting. She dedicated herself body and soul to vegetarianism and animal rights activism.

The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet

The actress has written books on these issues, become a spokesperson for ecological housing, and served as an ambassador for the PeTA Association for animal rights.

PeTA activist

"I prefer to go n a k e d than wear wool," said the actress in a PeTA campaign. And yes, she then stripped off her clothes to denounce the use of animal skins. Alicia Silverstone emphasized the cruelty of the fur and wool industry. "It's like 'hey, we are going to torture you all your life and then cut your throat.' People don't know everything that happens on these farms."

On the personal side

In May 2011, Alicia Silverstone and her partner Christopher Jarecki had a baby boy. His name was Bear Blu. Seven years later, however, as they were about to celebrate 20 years of love, the couple announced that it was time for a divorce.

Alicia Silverstone in the 2010s

In 2012, Alicia Silverstone returned to the fray with a comedy called 'Vamps.' If we're honest, it passed by without any pity or glory. At this point, the actress was making more headlines for her past achievements than for her present work.

Couldn't find her place

With a series of titles in film, TV, and theater, the new Alicia Silverstone still couldn't find the role that would bring her back to the top of Hollywood. However, rescuing that lost fame of the 90s did not seem to be her plan anyway.

Alicia Silverstone speaks out about Hollywood

"I never had any interest in being a celebrity or being famous," Alicia Silverstone told Vanity Fair in 2018. "If someone had told me that acting in a movie implied being called 'fat' and having to do things in a certain way, I think I would have pushed them away."

Alicia Silverstone in 'Senior Year'

Despite the criticism and box-office failures, Alicia Silverstone continued to try her hand at acting. In the last few years, she has signed small roles that kept her going. Some of them were in Netflix productions: The series 'The Baby-Sitters Club' (2020-2021) and the film 'Senior Year' (2021). We also saw the actress in 2022, in the 'American Horror Story' episode called 'Lake', playing the role of Erin.

Still working in showbiz

The actress had quite a few film projects for 2023. Silverstone was involved in the horror film 'The Perpetrator' and in the thriller 'Reptile' with Benicio del Toro and Justin Timberlake. She also starred in the 2023 Pakistani-American comedy called 'Mustache.'

More to come!

Her fans also have more to look forward to. In 2024, the Dutch film 'Krazy House,' came out and she has one of the starring roles. She is also in the process of filming two more movies: 'Tunnels' and the disaster film 'Y2K,' which is about what would have happened if the worst fears at the turn of the millenium came true.

Alicia Silverstone and her love for fashion

Her iconic two-piece suit from 'Clueless' will live on in fashion cinematic history, but Silverstone is still linked to the fashion world and can be seen in the front rows of many shows and designers' events. The actress will continue to be a legendary 90s reference, and we love it!
