Farewell to 1960s' teen idol James Darren (Gidget, The Time Tunnel)

James William Ercolani, known in the film world as James Darren, died at the age of 88. He was waiting for an important operation but his body gave up on September 2, 2024.

James Darren first rose to fame in his twenties, playing surfer Moondoggie in the romantic comedy 'Gidget'.

The success of his role opened the door to the world of music, a job that he combined with other more important roles such as that of police officer Jim Corrigan in 'TJ H 0 0 k e r' (1982-1986).

Other notable roles include Vic Fontaine in 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' (1998-1999) and Dr. Tony Newman in 'The Time Tunnel' (1966-1967, pictured).

The actor, 88, was hospitalized while waiting for doctors to decide whether to replace a heart valve, his son Jim Moret stated on TMZ.

In fact, the reason why the actor was not operated on, as confirmed by his son, was because James Darren was very weak. Doctors decided to send him home but he had to return precisely because of that weakness. During his second visit to the health center, the actor died.

The actor was said to have died peacefully, without pain. He died while sleeping in his hospital room.

James Darren's versatility is evident in the celebrities who have wanted to say goodbye to him. These celebrities included musicians and stars from film and television.

Nancy Sinatra, whose daughter James Darren was godfather to, was one of the first to say goodbye: "One of my dearest, closest friends in all the world, of all my life has passed away. Godfather to my daughter, AJ. Wishing him a fast & beautiful journey through the Universe & beyond. Godspeed, sweet Jimmy."

William Shatner also had some heartfelt words for him. "Jimmy Darren; I worked with him for several years and then we'd see each other on occasion. What a wonderful man - so talented; so loving."
