The size of Brazil

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world, with 8,515,759 square kilometers (3,287,952 square miles) of territory. The only countries bigger than Brazil are Russia, Canada, the United States, and China.

In each state fits a whole country... or two!

Within Brazil, each state is the size equivalent to an entire country. Let's make some comparisons so you get the idea!

Amazonas = Malaysia + Germany

Amazonas is the largest Brazilian state, occupying 18% of its total area. With so much space, it could contain Malaysia and still have ample room for Germany.

However, it is not as big as Australia, as it would fit five times in the Oceanic country, nor does it match India, which is twice as big as Amazonas.

Amapá = Ireland

At the northern tip of Brazil lies the state of Amapá. It is roughly the size of Ireland but has fewer than one million people while the European country has over five.

Rio Grande do Sul = New Zealand

The territory of New Zealand can be compared to that of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The population of the southernmost state of Brazil is twice as large though: 10.8 million as opposed to 4.9 million in New Zealand.

São Paulo or Tocantins = United Kingdom

São Paulo is a little smaller than Tocantins, but both have a territory large enough to fit the United Kingdom! The state of São Paulo is the most populous in Brazil, with 44 million people.

Rio de Janeiro + Espírito Santo = UAE

Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo are two states with the same size. In each of them, Denmark would fit once, but in both of them together, you could fit the United Arab Emirates.

Federal District = Trinidad and Tobago

The federative unit where the capital of Brazil is located, occupies less than 1% of the national territory. You can compare it to the size of Trinidad and Tobago, the two-island nation near Venezuela.

Minas Gerais = Spain or Thailand

Minas Gerais is the fourth-largest Brazilian state and the second most populous, with more than 20 million inhabitants. In territorial terms, it would be comparable to Spain or Thailand. However, in Spain, more than double the number of people reside, and in Thailand, it's more than triple.

Bahia = France or 2x Philippines

The size of Bahia is equivalent to that of France. Its population, 14 million people, is a little over a third of that of France (47.7 million). In Bahia, you could fit the Philippines twice, but there are eight times more Filipinos than Bahians!

Pará = South Africa

Another large Brazilian state is Pará, with 1.24 million square kilometers (478,000 square miles). With all this, it could fit South Africa inside of it.

Alagoas = Haiti

Just above Sergipe comes Alagoas, whose dimensions are practically the same as Haiti, the third largest country in the Caribbean (after Cuba and the Dominican Republic).

Sergipe = El Salvador

Sergipe, the smallest Brazilian state, would fit El Salvador, a country in Central America. Both have a territory of approximately 20 thousand square kilometers (7,700 square miles).

Pernambuco = Portugal

Pernambuco resembles Portugal both in territorial size and population. The Brazilian state has around 9 million inhabitants, while the Portuguese Republic contains 10.4 million.

Paraíba = Croatia / Rio Grande do Norte = Bosnia

The list continues with Paraíba, which could contain Croatia, and Rio Grande do Norte, which has a territory equivalent to that of Bosnia (photo).

Ceará = Greece / Piauí = Ecuador

Ceará can be compared to Greece (photo) and Piauí, to Ecuador.

Maranhão = Italy / Mato Grosso = 3x Italy

As we can see, Brazil could fit into a long list of countries. Maranhão is the same size as Italy, while the great Mato Grosso could be home to the Italian country three times over!

Mato Grosso do Sul = Germany / Goiás = Finland

The area of Germany can be compared to that of Mato Grosso do Sul. The icy Finland is comparable to that of Goiás.

Roraima = Guyana

Roraima, the northernmost state of Brazil, has a territory similar to that of Guyana, the third smallest country in continental South America, after Uruguay and Suriname.

Acre = Nepal / Rondônia = Romania

Acre would fit Nepal (photo), the country that hosts Mount Everest, in the Himalayan region. And Rondônia has enough space to contain Romania, an eastern European republic.

Paraná = Senegal

The area of Paraná can be compared to that of Senegal, a West African country. Both are just under 200 thousand square kilometers.

Santa Catarina = Hungary

Lastly, we have Santa Catarina, whose extension can be compared to Hungary, an Eastern European country.
