'Piece of meat:' Why Emily Ratajkowski quit acting
She first caught the public's eye in the youth series 'iCarly,' portraying Tasha, but it was her 2013 appearance in Robin Thicke's controversial 'Blurred Lines' music video that really made headlines due to its objectification of women.
Following that, Emily Ratajkowski appeared in a few movies and was seen in series like 'The Spoils Before Dying' in 2015 and 'Easy' in 2016. Beyond that, not much else...
What has she been up to, and more importantly, why did she decide to stop acting?
Her name resurfaced in 2014 after she starred in 'Gone Girl' with Ben Affleck, followed by roles in 'Entourage' (2015), 'We Are Your Friends' (2015), 'Cruise' (2018), 'I Feel Pretty' (2018), 'In Darkness' (2018), and 'Lying and Stealing' (2019).
But then, she decided to leave Hollywood, revealing in an April 2023 Los Angeles Times interview that she felt "like a piece of meat," constantly judged on her appearance alone.
“I didn’t feel like, ‘Oh, I’m an artist performing and this is my outlet.’ I felt like a piece of meat who people were judging, saying, ‘Does she have anything else other than her [b r e@ sts]?’” Ratajkowski said .
In 2020, she also fired her manager, commercial representative, and agent, expressing distrust: "“I didn’t trust them," she said. “I was like, ‘I can handle receiving phone calls. I’m gonna make these decisions. None of you have my best interest at heart. And you all hate women.’”
Aside from acting, she has become one of the most sought-after models, walking alongside names like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner and working with brands like Versace and Tory Burch.
In 2021, she published her first book, 'My Body,' a collection of essays on power, beauty, and feminism, and launched a podcast, High Low With EmRata, sharing her feminist views.
In her personal life, the actress married producer Sebastian Bear-McClard in 2018, with whom she had her son, Sylvester Apollo Bear, in March 2021.
Despite ongoing infidelity rumors, she trusted her husband until the divorce in 2022, which was followed by controversy as several women accused the producer of s e x u a l abuse and insinuations.
As she revealed in the 'Going Mental by Dear Media' podcast, she spent much of the relationship "very unhappy" and battling depression. She later decided to break free and has even considered writing a book to help other young women facing their first divorce.
"I've read a lot of literature about divorce, but it tends to be about families ending after children have grown up," she told the Vogue Australia in 2023. "I do think so many women are divorcing at younger ages, and it's such a taboo and there's such stigma around it."
Emily Ratajkowski continues to move forward. She may be away from Hollywood (for now), but she remains true to her own principles.
