Remembering Laura Harring

Laura Elena Harring Martínez, known artistically as Laura Harring, was born in Los Mochis (Mexico) in 1964. Her family moved to Texas at the age of 10, where she survived a shooting that left her with a head injury.

From Miss USA to Countess

After studying at a Swiss boarding school, Harring won the titles of Miss El Paso, Miss Texas, and Miss USA, the first Latina to do so. At the age of 18, she married a descendant of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, earning the title of Countess, according to El Pais.

Early career

She began her acting career in 1987 with the TV film ‘The Alamo: Thirteen Days to Glory’, and had brief appearances in series such as ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Blossom’ and ‘Frasier’, before landing longer roles in ‘General Hospital’ and ‘Sunset Beach’.

Her best-known role

In 1999, Harring starred in David Lynch's ‘Mulholland Drive’, initially conceived as a TV series, according to the website Espinof. The film, which premiered at Cannes, became a cult classic and saw Harring rise to fame.

Most popular character

In ‘Mulholland Drive’, Harring played an amnesiac woman who adopts the name Rita. Her performance made her one of the most enigmatic figures in Lynch's filmography.

The rest of her career

After the success of ‘Mulholland Drive’, Harring had roles in films such as ‘John Q’ alongside Denzel Washington, and ‘The Punisher’ with Thomas Jane. She also worked with Lynch again in ‘Inland Empire’ (2006).
