Colleagues and enemies

Everything is not what it seems and not everybody gets along. There are many examples of this in the music industry. The musicians in this gallery really hated each other!

Bands that had to split up...

Here's a list of music bands that had to deal with disagreements and hatred from different members of the group. Some separated, others physically attacked each other, and a few even sued their band colleagues… Let's see which famous (and not so famous) artists actually hated each other.

Oasis - Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher

They were the kings of the world in the '90s, and despite being brothers, they didn't get along well. Liam and Noel Gallagher's list of frictions was long, and their issues destroyed one of the biggest bands in history.

The final straw for 'Oasis' was in 2009 when right before going out to perform in the Festival Rock En Seine in France, Noel Gallagher and his brother started a fight backstage that, according to Radio X, ended up with Noel's guitar destroyed.

For fans, Noel's farewell announcement was really hard and sad: "It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

The Rolling Stones - Mick Jagger and Keith Richards

As shared by the NY Post, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards can't stand each other. In 'Life', Keith Richards' biography went as far as stating that they weren't just musicians, but also actors.

Their chemistry was initially fake, but after all those years working together it seemed natural. Out of public sight, Keith Richard made fun of Mick Jagger's parts, among other things.

The Libertines - Pete Doherty and Carl Barât

They became friends, started a band, and were a hit in the indie rock scene of early 2000. But they were actually really different from each other. One of them was calm and introverted, and the other was a tornado.

The Libertines - Pete Doherty and Carl Barât

The substance abuse problems of Pete Doherty kept him away from the band and his friend. But it was when 'The Guardian' published a piece of information saying that Doherty had broken into Carl Barât's home to rob when the artist was kicked out from the band.

However, after 12 years, in 2015, Carl Barât made amends and 'The Libertines' released a new album together.

Blink 182 - Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge

'Blink 182' was really successful at the beginning of the 21st century thanks to their pop-punk sound and cool music videos, however, the artists' egos got in the way. Mark Hoppus wanted to do something more dance alternative, whilst Tom DeLong was inclined to a more hardcore sound.

They respectively released '+44' and 'Box Car Racer' both with Travis Barker on the drums, but it never reached the level of 'Blink 182'. That meant the end of the band.

It was also the fact that Mark Hoppus had quit being a musician to study UFOS what threw the band away. However, it all has had a happy ending because in 2022 the band got back together and is going on a world tour in 2023 and 2024.

The Ramones - Joey Ramone and Johnny Ramone

On the one hand, Johnny was a conservative republican, on the other, Joey was a liberal and a democrat. They obviously clashed. But things got worse when in 1984 Johnny ended up marrying Linda Danielle, Joey's ex-girlfriend.

Joey's hatred was focused on creating a new song: 'The KKK Took My Baby Away'. Things were so bad between the two that Johnny didn't even attend Joey Ramone's funeral in 2001. Three years later, he would die of prostate cancer.

Of course, Linda Danielle was said to be the Yoko Ono of 'The Ramones'. In the book 'On the Road With The Ramones', Joey assured that the day his brother stole his girlfriend "he destroyed their relationship and the band."

The Police - Sting and Stewart Copeland

Stewart Copeland, drummer of 'The Police' called Sting 'The God of Rock' and it wasn't in the literal sense of the sentence…

Their relationship was so tense that Copeland even broke Sting some ribs by hitting him with his knee. Consequently (and logically) the band split up in the middle of the '80s.

Pixies - Frank Black and Kim Deal

They were key for the success of alternative rock in the '80s and '90s thanks to songs like 'Where Is My Mind?' or 'Here Comes Your Man' which belong now to the history of music. They achieved all of that even if their frontman, Black Francis, and their bassist, Kim Deal, didn't get along.

Kim Deal felt that he was undermined by Black Francis, who had the creative control of the band. The bass player ended up founding 'The Breeders' with her twin sister when the 'Pixes' ended in 1993. However, Kim Deal joined the band again for a reunion tour in 2004 and continued with the 'Pixies' until 2013.

The Smashing Pumpkins - Billy Corgan and D'arcy Wretzky

D'arcy Wretzky is one of the most respected bassists of alternative rock of the '90s. Despite that, in 1999, she decided to leave The Smashing Pumpkins due to the bad relationship between her and Billy Corgan.

The artist confessed to Rolling Stone that "Billy's controlling nature" was the reason she got out of the group. It is well-known that the leader of the band was very meticulous about his job but we didn't know how much.

Billy Corgan also spoke to the magazine and specified that it was the guitarist of the band, James Iha, responsible for the breakup. But he also had some really nasty words to say about D'arcy Wretzky: "Did it help that D'arcy Wretzky was fired for being an addict that refused to get help? No, that did not help to maintain the band together at all."

Pink Floyd - Roger Waters and David Gilmour

This is maybe one of the biggest ego fights in the history of music. Roger Waters and David Gilmour ended up going to court.

Pink Floyd - Roger Waters and David Gilmour

According to what Nick Mason, the group's drummer, told Rolling Stone, Roger Waters never respected David Gilmore. Waters thought he was (and really was) the creative leader of the band and that he had total control over it.

Everything got worse when in 1986 Roger Waters sued David Gilmour and Nick Mason for the 'Pink Floyd' rights, stating that "they were a spent source creatively."

The Kinks - Dave Davies and Mick Avory

On May 19, 1965, The Kinks were playing live in Wales when Dave Davies, the leader of the band, suggested the drummer, Mick Avory, play the instrument with his genitals because it would surely sound better than what he was doing…

Avory answered Davies by hitting him with a drumstick and leaving him unconscious. He thought he had killed Davies, so he immediately ran away from the concert. However, Davies was pretty much alive and only needed 16 stitches.

Although the band continued together until 1996, the relationship between Davies and Avory was never the same.
