Flops of the year: The worst (and funniest) movie reviews of 2024
Chris Evans and The Rock got a few bomb reviews, Madame Web got panned and more than one comic book character took a hit or two. There have been some poorly received movies in 2024 and here are just a few of our favorite critics' comments.
The much-hyped Christmas action movie 'Red One' did not greatly please the critics. "The problem is that Red One seems to either hate Christmas or fundamentally misunderstand it as a concept," Tom Beasley from Voice magazine wrote.
And there were more scathing reviews for 'Red One'... Mattie Lucas, freelance critic on Rotten Tomatoes, called it "An ugly, under-lit, joyless slog, devoid of any holiday charm or sense of fun."
The Marvel movie 'Kraven' also drew some creative lines from the critics. "Built on brawn, J.C. Chandor's action sci-fi picture 'Kraven the Hunter' is limited by incomprehensible plotting and dodgy one-liners delivered by a cast who seem to be practicing their worst Russian accents," the New York Times opined.

"Kraven may be the world's greatest hunter, but next time, he needs to track down a better movie," the Seattle Times noted.

Part 2 of the Joker saga with Joaquin Phoenix bombed with the public and the experts. Matt Singer from Screen Crush concluded:
"I can’t say I 'liked' Joker: Folie a Deux. But the film seemed so intent on being hated by its target audience, that I couldn't help but admire its antisocial instincts. The joke was definitely on the audience this time."

About 'Madame Web' with Dakota Johnson, Wall Street Journal's Kyle Smith said: "It collapses so pathetically that studio executives might as well have dialed 911 to rescue it."
"A Dreadful, Pointless Sequel That Never Should Have Seen The Light Of Day. It tells us a story that nobody asked for and never needed to be told in the first place", Forbes judged the sequel of 'Gladiator'.
"'Argylle', an ugly, unfunny action comedy that somehow cost a reported $200 million. Mashed and rehashed from far superior rom-coms and spy movies like 'Romancing the Stone' and 'Total Recall'. Where did all that money go?" Screen Crush stated.

"The Crow 2.0 is a total, head-in-hands disaster, incoherently plotted and sloppily made, destined to join the annals of the very worst and most pointless remakes ever made", The Guardian argued.

"With Paul Feig directing, this should be a brash, exuberantly violent blast of chaotic hilarity," The Observer stated. "But enthusiastic mugging and gurning from the cast can't hide a feeble, flailing screenplay that clings to its single idea like a lifebelt."

"A horror-com smoothie made mostly of ancient, moldy fruit." Variety was merciless.

Francis Ford Coppola directed this movie, but it did not make it any good, an IMDb user argued: "This film is a disaster of epic proportions - an absolute train wreck that careens off the tracks, crashes, and then somehow sets itself on fire."

"The Jennifer Lopez-starring sci-fi yarn about a dystopian future counterterrorism analyst whose hunt for an evil AI humanoid forces her to team up with an artificially intelligent robot mech suit is badly plotted, badly acted, and has the kind of soupy special effects that would have looked bad in a video game from 20 years ago," Screen Crush stated about JLo's movie adventure on Netflix.

"If there was a thing called the IMDb Witness Protection Program whereby you could get your name taken off the credits of a particular project, this would be that project", the Chicago Sun Times harshly wrote about Jerry Seinfeld's movie about cereals.

"No good will can wholly brush away the ersatz hokeyness of this venture," the Irish Times wrote about this LGBTQ road trip movie with Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan.

Kevin Costner made an enormous Western Saga with 'Horizon.' However, he seems to stand alone in loving it. "Unless you are resolutely, shamelessly committed to the exact same palate and mood board as Costner himself, this first entry in the 'Horizon: An American Saga' series is a death sentence", Charlotte Simmons wrote for We Got This Covered.

This superhero film with Tom Hardy was described as "an absolute car crash of a film. That's not to say that bits of it aren't entertaining... if you throw enough p00p at the wall, then some of it it's gonna stick," film critic Mark Kermode argues.
"Imagine a better movie. It's not hard," John Serba said about 'Imaginary' for the critics' outlet Decider.

Harsh words about Jason Statham's new action movie. "Just absolute bee-movie trash," Empire Magazine stated.

"Twisters is a big, loud summer blockbuster, but it won't blow you away," iNews wrote... Very punny.

Just like 'Atlas', 'Uglies' was a dystopian sci-fi movie on Netflix. As The Wrap said, it was "something to fill a quota, not to be thought about or enjoyed." The film was made "so that Netflix can tell their subscribers technically they have a new exclusive movie this week, quality be d4m ned. And in this case, quality was indeed d4m ned."

According to Variety, this film starring Chris Pine was "not only the worst film I saw during the fall festival season but [it] would likely be one of the worst films in any year it came out."

This movie was banned in China for depicting the famous bear in such a dark light. "Stay one hundred acres away, because this is one big pile of Pooh", Joseph Tomastik wrote for 'Loud and Clear Reviews'.

"This splatterfest horror feature is better than its predecessor much in the same way succeeding Covid variants are better than the early, more lethal strains", The Guardian added to the pile.

"It's unclear if Steffen & Flip believe in a hell for their characters. But their 85-minute torture device disguised as a movie proves they believe in one for their viewers." Marshall Shaffer from 'The Playlist' did not mince words about this Dutch action horror film with Nick Frost and Alicia Silverstone.
