The celebrity couple leading Argentina: Javier Milei and Fátima Flórez
It is no exaggeration to say that the arrival of Javier Milei as president of Argentina has caused an earthquake in South American politics. The name of the politician, a rocker with no governing experience who went to campaign with a chainsaw in his hands, is already loudly heard across the planet.
Next to Milei is his girlfriend, Fátima Flórez, the new First Lady of Argentina, as media like CNN call her. Let's talk a little bit more about this glamorous woman, who may become the present-day 'Evita.'
Fátima Flórez is well-known in Argentina as an actress, comedian, dancer, and television host.
Flórez is mainly known for her impersonations of other celebrities. Not only does she imitate Argentine stars but also international figures such as Lady Gaga or Liza Minnelli.
Her funny impersonations, comparable to those in the American show 'Saturday Night Live,' include a very famous one of the former Argentine president Cristina Kirchner (image).
Javier Milei is a staunch opponent of the Kirchner political dynasty and of Peronism in general. The dynamic between him and his wife, a lookalike of his opponent according to media such as Spanish ABC, may be rather curious.
Fátima Flórez was with her former manager, Norberto Marcos, for decades. They got married in 2001 and separated in the previous year, around the time she met Javier Milei, the local media reported. However, it is unclear whether she has signed the divorce papers with him.
The digital media outlet El Español claims that Milei and Flórez met in December 2022. They were both invited to the same talk show.
While outsiders may find him rough around the edges, or downright aggressive in his demeanor, Flórez told El Español that he is, in fact, "a gentleman, super affectionate." The actress added that he is "truly an excellent human being, as well as very intelligent."
After her boyfriend won the election, Flórez told CNN in Spanish: "Javier is a brilliant person who prepared his whole life for this. There is a reason people chose him."
No, she is not. "I am a woman dedicated to doing theater, and I am going to continue with my work," she declared.
"I'm also going to accompany Javier, I'm his girlfriend and I want to spend quality time with him. I think I will be able to divide both tasks," she added
When asked by Radio Rivadavia what role Fátima Flórez would play as first lady of Argentina, President Milei said that his girlfriend would continue "generating wealth from the private sector."
"Fátima is a brilliant woman," he said. "Beyond the sentimental bond" he has with her, the Argentine president acknowledges that "she is successful in serving others with better quality goods, at a good price, where you pay and get two hours of joy. That is the value she brings."
There's some tension surrounding the status of Milei's girlfriend as Argentina's present-day 'Evita.' Previously, the presidential candidate had stated on numerous occasions that his sister, Karina Milei, would hold the official position of first lady of Argentina.
Karina Milei, nicknamed 'The Boss,' is seen as her brother's right-hand woman. She led his successful presidential campaign. However, she is not a celebrity in South American entertainment as Fátima Flórez is.
