How King Charles and Princess Kate battle cancer together
Both the King and the Princess are battling cancer. King Charles III broke royal protocol in February by revealing the personal health diagnosis less than two years after inheriting the throne from his mother. Princess Catherine of Wales, his daughter-in-law, released an emotional video also telling the world about her condition.
King Charles III began treatment and stepped back from public duties while chaos erupted on social media as to the whereabouts of Princess Kate. In March, she revealed that she had had abdominal surgery and was undergoing preventative chemotherapy treatment for cancer.
A statement, released by Buckingham Palace said Charles is "so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did". The king has since remained in the 'closest contact' with his son's wife.
In January, the Princess of Wales and King Charles were in the hospital at the same time: Kate had abdominal surgery, and the King had a prostate procedure.
The Daily Mail reports the King visited Kate in her nearby room multiple times during their recovery at a London clinic. Or rather, 'toddled' over to check on her, as the outlet describes.
"They have never been closer than they are right now," an insider said to Closer. "Going through this cancer journey together has brought them together in a way that they never expected, but is much appreciated by both of them."
The two have had a very 'tough couple of months' as Kate Middleton explained in her video. But it seems this has only strengthened family bonds. A royal insider told Closer exclusively that the two are feeling 'less alone together'.
The source continued, "Kate would have been there for Charles no matter what, of course, but now when she finds something that gives her comfort — like a new TV show that takes her mind off of everything — she makes certain to share it with Charles."
Reports from many different media widely state that Charles is very fond of Kate. During his 2023 state visit to Kenya, the monarch reminisced about Prince William's 2010 proposal where he affectionately referred to her as "my beloved daughter-in-law" in his speech.
In return, Catherine, now Princess of Wales with her husband due to be King one day, has always shown affection in public towards her father-in-law and often exchanged hugs and kisses on the cheek in greeting.
The king "has always had a very good bond with her," author Sally Bedell Smith previously told People magazine. But now they have another shared bond - their cancer diagnosis.
"Obviously, they have this in common and can only bring them closer," Befell Smith, writer of ‘George VI and Elizabeth: The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy’, noted. "It is a source of reassurance and consolation for both of them."
But the diagnosis has not only brought the two closer together, but also ‘endeared them to millions of people around the world’ as Shannon Felton Spence, a former British public affairs official told Fox News Digital.
His Majesty continues his treatment for cancer and has returned to some public duties with his positive progress. Kate is staying out of the limelight for now, focusing on her treatment and being with her family.
Yet, it seems the prognosis looks good as an insider reports to Closer that Kate is optimistic the family will be able to travel to Balmoral this Summer to be together for a while. "Kate hopes to spend time there with the kids, William and Charles before the rest of the extended family arrives."
The insider concluded, "In so many ways, Kate is the daughter that Charles never had. She keeps his spirit up by looking forward to the future."
