Jude Law's stinky method for his role in 'Firebrand'

In the film by Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, Jude Law plays King Henry VIII, in a performance that has been unanimously praised by critics.

Jude Law's Henry VIII is an obscure character, overweight, paranoid, obsessed with carnal relations but, above all, with a gangrenous leg. The way the actor recreated that gangrene is disgusting.

"Blood, fecal matter, and sweat." That's what Jude Law told the press at the Tribeca Festival about the smell he had made and applied to his leg to get an authentic experience.

What began as a discreet aide, according to the actor, ended up being used permanently after he told his 'secret' to Karim Aïnouz. The director was enthusiastic about the initiative. "It just became a spray-fest," he said at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

"Karim creates what I call a 360-degree environment to acting," Jude Law said. "You don't know where the camera is, it's all sort of set-up shots, it builds a world. So the scent was a big part of that, we wanted it to smell and feel real." And they got it.

Who suffered more than anyone from this idea of Jude Law? Obviously, his co-star, Alicia Vikander, who plays Catherine Parr. In real life, Parr was the only wife who survived Henry VIII.

The actress commented at a press conference that it smelled awful when she arrived at the set. In fact, whenever they could, they opened the windows to refresh the air a little. However, it was very cold, Jude Law added.
