Kickball: Not just for children anymore!
Kickball (known as soccer baseball in Canada and football rounders in the UK) is a staple of the playground in the United States and several other countries.
Kickball has been around for over a century. Dr. Emmett Dunn Angell wrote about the sport in 1911, noting that it is "an exercise that is not too violent and is full of fun."
Kickball doesn’t need complicated equipment or high skills. This makes a perfect game for all ages!
It’s also a fun way to introduce people to a basic understanding of baseball for those who aren't familiar with one of America's favorite sports.
Growing up is no excuse to stop playing kickball! There are many local Kickball teams and clubs across the United States.
The World Kickball Association explains on its official website how kickball can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.
"Kickball is the perfect blend of socializing, fun, and competition while remaining accessible to all," the website states.
The WKA website also highlights the social aspect of the game: "Whether you just moved to a new town and want to make friends, or your office wants to organize a team, kickball is a great option for everyone."
The WKA supports Clubwaka, the official adult kickball league in the United States, with clubs in over 30 cities across the country.
However, this doesn’t mean that you can play on your own with a few friends, a ball, and enough space.
The rules of kickball are generally similar to those of baseball or softball, but flexible enough to allow, let’s say, informal adaptations.
A pitcher, however, is a must. The pitcher usually stands on a pitching mound, throwing the ball to a catcher at home base.
A kicker, in place of a batter, tries to kick the ball as far as they can.
There are also three bases, plus the home base. The kicker must try to run around all the bases and make it back to home base again.
And, of course, the other players must cover the field. The WKA generally recommends a team of 10 fielders.
Of course, the most important element can’t be missed: Fun!
