Multiple tragedies for Mariah Carey: her mother and sister die on the same day
Superstar Mariah Carey confirmed to People magazine that both her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, passed away on the same day in the weekend of August 24.
"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend," Carey said in an exclusive statement to People. "Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day."
Carey, 55, said she felt blessed to have been able to spend the last week at her mother's side before her passing. She thanked everyone for their support and respect for her privacy during this difficult time.
So far, no additional details or causes of death for Patricia and Alison have been revealed.
A Juilliard-trained opera singer, Patricia was married to Alfred Roy Carey. She was the mother of Alison, Mariah, and Morgan. The couple divorced when Mariah was just 3 years old.
Throughout her life, Mariah's relationship with her mother, from whom she inherited her vocal talent, was complicated and full of ups and downs.
In her 2020 autobiography, 'The Meaning of Mariah Carey', the singer described her relationship with her mother as a "rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment."
Despite the difficulties, Mariah and Patricia maintained a relationship and even recorded a duet of 'O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus' together in 2010 for an ABC Christmas special.
The singer also dedicated a part of her autobiography to Patricia, expressing that, despite everything, she believes that her mother did the best she could.
Carey's relationship with her sister Alison was also complex. In her autobiography, the singer said it was "emotionally and physically safer" at the time to have no contact with her.
Nor has she had contact with her brother Morgan. This may have to change now that they are burying two members of the family.
