Two major surprises

Among the surprises, two are especially relevant. First of all, there's the presence of Andrea Riseborough (image) and Brian Tyree Henry among the five candidates for supporting roles. In addition, the six nominations for 'Top Gun: Maverick' are more than most people would have expected, and they include Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The forgotten ones

Among the forgotten stars are illustrious names like Brad Pitt (Babylon), Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse), and Paul Dano (The Fabelman). It seemed clear that at least one of them would be among the five nominees for Best Supporting Actor. But it wasn't so.

Unexpected absences?

When it comes to actresses, Olivia Colman (Empire of Light), Viola Davis (The Woman King), and Margot Robbie (Babylon) will not compete for the statuette, despite predictions that they were among the favorites.

Cameron and Luhrmann, no Oscar for Best Director.

The Academy also overlooked James Cameron (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Baz Luhrmann (Elvis) for the category of Best Director.

Double blow to Chazelle

But the hardest hit has been Damien Chazelle. Not only has he missed out on a Best Director nomination, but 'Babylon' is also left out of the list of 10 nominees for Best Picture. A hard blow for the director of 'Whiplash' and 'La La Land.'
