How Shannen Doherty died financially ruined
Shannen Doherty was diagnosed with cancer in March 2015, over nine years ago. It would end her life in July 2024. The actress of 'Beverly Hills, 90210' and 'Charmed' died in her Malibu, California home on July 13.
Doherty went through the ordeal of treatments, pain, and negative thoughts. Apart from that, she also had to deal with the healthcare system of the United States, where a serious illness can cause significant economic stress, even when you're insured.
It started with the detection of the illness. As she claimed in a lawsuit against the company managing her financial affairs, Shannen Doherty did not have insurance in 2014 due to 'an error' by her manager in sorting the policy.
When she finally was insured and could go to the doctor in 2015, a tumor was discovered. In fact, the medical team claimed that her "invasive b r e a s t cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node" would probably have already been visible - and treatable more easily - if it had been detected in 2014. These statements were recorded by Business Insider during Doherty's lawsuit against her managers.
Once the illness was discovered, Doherty tried as much as she could to surpass it, including a mastectomy and chemotherapy. But those procedures cost a lot of money.
Although she was a famous Hollywood star, Shannen Doherty had great difficulty paying her medical bills in the nine years she was sick. In the end, she died bankrupt, media like US Magazine report.
Shannen Doherty's cancer had initially gone into remission in 2017, but it came back three years later. The actress then learned that the illness was in phase 4, with metastases to the brain and bones. Incurable.
The only attempt the actress could make to survive was an experimental treatment. However, her medical insurance did not cover that specific treatment. So, in order to try and save her life, Shannen Doherty had to dig into her savings.
According to US Magazine, the actress could not work due to her condition. However, royalties from the successful series 'Beverly Hills, 90210' and 'Charmed' continued to come in for a while.
However, when their reruns ended, that income ended too. Shannen Doherty only had some money from the 2019 reboot 'BH: 90210' but the hospital bills were overwhelming.
Meanwhile, Doherty was in a difficult divorce proceeding with her ex, the photographer Kurt Iswarienko. She asked him for spousal support, but he refused, claiming he had made less money than Doherty's representatives assumed.
In her petition before the judge, Doherty explained that she had no income and could not work. She even feared she would not be able to pay her health insurance fee, let alone the experimental treatments.
US Magazine reports that the actress asked her ex for $15,343 per month, plus $9,100 in attorney's fees for her divorce.
Unfortunately, she never got Iswarienko's monetary support because she died before the proceedings ended.
In fact, shortly before she died, Shannen Doherty accused her ex-partner of stalling the divorce proceedings, to try and stretch them beyond her lifetime, so he wouldn't have to pay her anything after she was dead.
Right before she died, the actress said in her podcast 'Let's Be Clear' that, in recent years, she had sold her possessions in order to enjoy life at least a little. She had taken the opportunity to travel with her mother and "create different memories of the people I love."
