The drama between Olympian Carlos Yulo and his mother
Carlos Yulo, now the darling of the Philippines after his appearance in the most recent Paris Olympic Games, has received a lot of attention, particularly for his recent harsh and public fight with his mother. Here's a breakdown of the conflict between Carlos and his mother, Angelica Yulo.
Carlos Yulo is a Filipino artistic gymnast. He is also an Olympic athlete, having recently won two gold medals in the floor and vault events, which the official Olympic Federation considers a "historic" record win.
Carlos Yulo was born Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo on February 16, 2000, in Manila, Philippines. The Philippine Star reports that his parents, mother Angelica Yulo, is a stay-at-home mom, while father Mark Andrew Yulo is a travel agent liaison.
Did you know?: Carlos Yulo is not the only gymnast in the family. In his family of four siblings, he has two younger siblings who are competitive gymnasts as well, reports Rappler.
According to Rappler, Carlos Yulo first started his professional career in gymnastics in 2008. Since then, he has made quite the record for himself, earning many national wins, which qualified him to be selected as one of the national representatives for the sport for the 2024 Olympics Games in Paris.
Carlos Yulo won two golds in his stint in the Paris Olympic games and immediately shot up to become one of the Philippines’ darling star athletes! However, the shine of his win was noticeably tarnished with his very public feud with his mother.
Angelica Yulo was reported by the BBC to have been alleged to have mismanaged her son’s money when confronted about it in a radio interview on the day of her son’s second win at the Olympics. She had denied the claim in the interview, and added that “she had received money on her son’s behalf” and deposited it in the bank.

The money in question includes Carlos' previous prize money as well as his most recent Olympic winnings, which include a whopping 20 million Philippine pesos, several sponsorships, and gifts, according to the BBC.
Carlos Yulo took to TikTok to swiftly contest his mother’s claim. In a Forbes report, Carlos Yulo asserted instead that Angelica Yulo had withdrawn money, including his prize money, from the said bank account.
Carlos Yulo also added that his mother had withheld accurate information regarding prize money won in a 2022 competition by understating the actual amount won and deposited in the bank.

The same Forbes article states that Angelica Yulo had defended herself in response to her son’s first TikTok exposé by stating that she had withdrawn money from their joint account and deposited it into her personal one for safekeeping.

More back-and-forth exchanges soon followed, rocking Philippine tabloids, as Carlos Yulo released yet another TikTok criticising his mother for handing over his prize money "without his consent", reports The Manila Bulletin.
According to GMA Network, Carlos Yulo revealed that he and his mother are not on good terms due to her disapproval of his relationship with his girlfriend, whom his mother sees as a “red flag” and after her son’s money.
Given the backlash over her handling of her son’s money, along with public opinion mostly siding with Carlos, Angelica Yulo eventually gave in and publicly apologized to her son on national TV, reports ABS-CBN News.

Despite the events happening months ago in August, it seems that there are more recent updates that make the public can’t help but be reminded of the very public mother-son spat.
