The highest-grossing films of 2023: how many have you seen?
Interestingly, many of the films on the list have been considered flops, despite having more than acceptable box office takings. Let's review the year's highest-grossing films...
The most popular of the year, generating controversy, incredible performances and a nice chunk of money: currently grossing: $1,441.8 million
Jack Black returned in The Super Mario Bros. Movie - a funny, light and all round winning family movie. Another film to rake in the cash this year: $1,361.4 million.
One of those 'if you haven't seen it, you need to' films. Many would agree as viewers returned more than once to watch it on the big screen. Grossing at $952 million.

Spring brought Marvel fans Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. Doesn't really matter if critics like it or not - you are either a fan or you aren't. Turns out there are lots of fans, so many as to rake in $845.6 million this year.

The actor Jason Momoa is loved by women, held in high esteem by men and looked up to by youngsters. It's no surprise his movie made $704.7 million.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was much anticipated by the world. The first film of the creatively-animated Spider-Man really impressed critics... and this instalment? Well, it's Marvel, isn't it? $690.5 million

The family film, starring Halle Bailey, gained interest from the beginning, with many audiences wanting to visit the cinema to see the actress at work. She drew in millions. The Little Mermaid grossed $569.6 million in 2023.
Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. Tom Cruise doing what he does best in this 2 part finale of the Mission Impossible series. $567.6 million
A feel good Disney film about two elements and how they have more in common than they think. $496.2 million

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - another Marvel Blockbuster. Many fans were disappointed with this film and received less positive reviews than the previous Ant-Man films. $476 million

John Wick: Chapter 4. Would we get a perfect ending to the surprise cult hero that is John Wick? We certainly did. $440.1 million

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Has this series lost its spark and relying too much on mediocre special effects? If they want to keep the franchise they are going to have to up their game... but managed to get a successful profit of $440 million.

Meg 2: The Trench. Proving once again that there is nothing Jason Statham won't fight. $395 million

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This was a farewell to a favourite of the screen. But please, let's keep it like this and not try to reboot the series. Fans of the franchised loved it, though and it raked in $384 million.

A video game inspired film so followers of the game were never going to miss this. The film made a decent return of $289 million.

Proving the Rocky franchise still has pulling power and pulling in $275.2 million.
DC were lucky to make any money back on this film. Re-cuts and scandals marked the film throughout its production and release - and yet, the box office receipts speak. $270.6 million in the bag.
The Nun II is follow up to the successful first film, and people do love a good horror film. Grossed $268.1 million in 2023.
