Why Gigi Hadid was detained in the Cayman Islands
Travel to the Cayman Islands usually involves pleasure, business, or both. It's an enjoyable trip from the first minute unless, as is what happened to Gigi Hadid, you are detained upon arrival.
The American model was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana upon her arrival on the island.
The events, reported by TMZ, occurred on July 10, although they were not made public until several days later.
Everything happened, according to TMZ, at Owen Roberts International Airport, where the model had just landed in a private jet.
Then came the moment she passed her luggage through customs... and the problems began for Gigi Hadid.
As TMZ details, several Customs and Border Control agents determined that there were suspicious items in the luggage and decided to inspect it by hand.
In doing so, they found a minimal but punishable amount of the prohibited substance, as well as a range of paraphernalia.
According to TMZ, sources close to Gigi Hadid say that the seized material was not part of the model's belongings, but of those of her companion.
However, since the private plane was in Gigi Hadid's name, what was found inside automatically became her responsibility.
As a result, both the model and her companion, whose identity has not been revealed, were transferred to the Royal Detention Center in the Cayman Islands, as reported by TMZ.
She was charged with one count of importing cannabis and paraphernalia, but authorities determined that the amount they were carrying was for personal use.

For this reason, the matter did not escalate and the model was released on bail after paying a fine of 1,000 dollars.
Considering that, according to Celebrity Net Worth, Gigi Hadid has an estimated worth of $30 million, it doesn't look like the fine is going to be too much of a problem for her finances.

Fortunately for her, this arrest will not be on her criminal record either. This could have been a serious problem for the future, according to TMZ.
On the other hand, TMZ reports that Gigi Hadid accused the officers at the airport of wanting her to pay them directly, which the model refused.

The Cayman Islands Police reportedly denied the allegations, inviting the model to file a formal complaint with the Professional Standards Unit to review the case. It does not seem that this will happen and everything will remain an uncomfortable 1,000-dollar moment.
