The debate on surrogacy is open. And while there are countries like Spain where it is considered a form of violence against women, in others - like the United States, it is fully accepted as another reproductive technique. A method to which some of the most famous personalities in the world are increasingly resorting, for different reasons...

One of them is Paris Hilton, who together with her husband, economist Carter Reum, announced in January 2023 that they has just become parents of little Phoenix Barron, their first child, who came into the world thanks to a surrogate. "You are already loved beyond words," wrote the celebrity, who had already acknowledged her fertility problems in the past on her social networks.

Health problems also made Kim Kardashian opt for surrogacy to bring her two youngest children, Chicago (2018) and Psalm West (2019), into the world. And as she herself told on her family's reality show, after having the two older ones, North and Saint, doctors had warned her of the risks that another pregnancy would pose to her body.

And it was Kim Kardashian herself who convinced her sister Khloé to resort to surrogacy to become a mother again in 2022 with her partner, basketball player Tristan Thompson, with whom she had already had her first daughter, True (2018), naturally. And the criticism rained down on her both for her photo tucked in a hospital bed with her newborn baby (as if she had given birth herself), and for her words on the Kardashians' reality show about the process: “When the baby comes it will be a blessing, but the waiting process… this sh^* sucks,”

Elton John and his husband, film director David Furnish, managed to fulfill their dream of becoming parents in Christmas 2010, when Zachary, their first child, was born thanks to a surrogate mother. The same also gave birth to Elias (2013), the couple's second child. Previously, in 2009, the two had tried to adopt an HIV-positive child in Ukraine, but the country's authorities prevented them from doing so because they were a same-sex couple and because of the singer's age (he was 62 at the time).

Ricky Martin always dreamed of having a big family, something he has been able to achieve thanks to surrogacy. In 2008, his twins Valentino and Matteo were born and, ten years later, in 2018, when he was already in a relationship with the artist Jwan Yosefen, Lucia was born. Finally, in October 2019, little Renn arrived.

The family of actor Robert de Niro, has had children in different marriages and relationships. Specifically seven, three of which were born through surrogacy. They are the twins Julian Henry and Aaron Kendrick, whom he had with the model Toukie Smith; and Helen Grace, fruit of his relationship with Grace Hightower.

Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, chef David Burtka, are the parents of twins, Gideon Scott and Harper Grace, born through surrogacy in October 2010.

The spectacular and large family of Alec and Hilaria Baldwin consists of no less than nine members: the two of them plus their seven children (Carmen Gabriela, Rafael Thomas, Leonardo, Romeo Alejandro, Eduardo Pau, Maria Lucia and Ilaria Catalina). And it was Maria Lucia who came into the world through a surrogate, in February 2021, just five months after her brother Eduardo Before Eduardo's birth, she suffered a miscarriage of a baby girl and as she herself told on her Instagram profile: "When I found out that our baby had died, I told our children that their sister was coming, but not at that time".

In 2016, American supermodel Tyra Banks fulfilled her dream of becoming a mother. However she had to resort to a surrogate because of her fertility issues. Among the 11 children Elon Musk has, his daughter Exa Dark Sidarel (simply called Y), was born through surrogacy in December 2021, when his relationship with the child's mother, the Canadian artist Grimes, was already broken. Their third child together, Techno Mechanicus (nicknamed Tau), was also reportedly born by the same method shortly thereafter.

Equally large is the family formed by Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez. The eldest of their children, Junior, was born in California in 2010 through a surrogate mother, as were the twins Eva María and Mateo (2017), whom he had when he had already started a relationship with Georgina Rodríguez. With her he has also had Alana Martina (2017) and in 2022 the twins Bella Esmeralda and Angel, who died.

The actress of 'Charlie's Angels', decided to become a single mother and in 2015 resorted to surrogacy to have her son, whom she named Rockwell Lloyd.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick have three children together: James Wilkie, who was born naturally, and twins Marion and Tabitha, born in 2009 through surrogacy.

Two of the three children born to actress Ellen Pompeo ('Grey's Anatomy') were born through surrogacy. Stella Luna, the eldest, was born in the traditional way in 2009, while her second daughter, Sienna May (2014), and her third son, Eli Christopher (2016), were born through surrogacy.

Similarly, the famous American host Jimmy Fallon and his wife, Nancy Juvonen, resorted to this technique to become parents to their daughters Winnie Rose and Frances Cole, who were born in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

January 2022 started with good news for Priyanka Chopra and her husband, singer Nick Jonas, as they became parents of little Malti Marie through surrogacy. Apparently, according to some American tabloids, Chopra might have suffered from fertility problems. "I had medical complications. This was a necessary step. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months," she said in February in the British edition of Vogue magazine.

In the same way, fertility problems made Nicole Kidman adopt her two older children, Connor and Isabella, with Tom Cruise. However, in 2008, already married to musician Keith Urban, she was able to give birth to Sunday Rose, her first biological daughter. She was followed in 2011 by another baby girl, Faith Margaret, who was born through surrogacy.

Fashion designer and television personality Tan France and his husband, Rob, let the world know in 2021 that they had become parents to their first child, Ismail France, who was born on July 10, 2021. And in May 2023 they repeated the experience with the arrival of their second son, Isaac.
