It's tartan time! Integrate plaid in your wardrobe, just like the stars

The pop and art festival in Indio, California always shows us the new trends of the year. This time, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt showed us what we should be wearing this summer and fall: checkered, plaid, and tartan patterns.

One of Gwen Stefani's outfits on the Coachella stage was this red, checkered onesie with a waistband of a contrasting color.

Previously, she had worn one of the other big motifs of 2024: yellow plaid.

The tartan trend was everywhere at the festival. Hats, shoes, pants, shirts, and bags were spotted with checkered fabrics.

The band members of No Doubt demonstrated that this trend is not just for women. Drummer Adrian Young even wore a kilt to honor the Scottish origins of the tartan pattern.

The American ska band was not the only one wearing plaid on stage. Singer Abigail Morris of The Last Dinner Party also sported a tartan set of a crop top and asymmetrical skirt for her show at Coachella.

We knew this was coming, as Fashion Weeks all over the world already announced a tartan trend in 2023. This picture was taken at the Louis Vuitton Womenswear Spring/Summer 2024 show during Paris Fashion Week.

Siblings in matching outfits! Finneas O'Connell and his younger sister Billie Eilish wore checkered pieces at the 2024 Oscar nominees' lunch. The siblings were nominated for Best Original Song with the track 'What Was I Made For?' from the 'Barbie' movie soundtrack.

And they would win, making this their second Oscar. Billie Eilish dressed up in a tweed skirt by Chanel topped with a black jacket and accessorized with a checkered handbag from Gucci. At Teen Vogue, they called it "school-girl chic".

The Oscars saw more celebrities making the fashion statement of 2024. NBA All-Star Russell Westbrook and his wife Nina Westbrook always try to surprise the crowd at the Vanity Fair Oscar afterparty. This year, Nina wore a Thom Browne tweed suit, the same designer that made her husband's outfit.

British actress Andrea Riseborough also made a big fat nod to the tartan trend during the Oscar ceremony. The nominee for Best Actress wore a striking white, grey, and red tartan-print dress by Loewe. Some commenters loved it, with the Daily Mail stating she "poses up a storm," while others said it was too casual and reminded them of Scotch tape. You can't say she played it safe!

And there's Demi Moore, arriving at the 'Drew Barrymore show' with her dog Pilaf in January 2024.

She would one-up her commitment to plaid at the Carolina Herrera show during New York Fashion Week in February 2024.

Country singer Keith Urban rocked the CMT Music Awards with this back-and-grey plaid button-down shirt.

For Avril Lavigne, tartan is a signature pattern. She's often wore jackets or skirts made of red tartan fabric. Now back in line with the fashion trend of 2024, during the Grammy Awards, Lavigne shows that some people can always get away with tartan.
