Singer Tommy Yuen released from jail after role in Hong Kong 2019 protests

Tommy Yuen is a Hong Kong singer who was once part of the boy band ‘E-kids’. He was arrested in 2019 due to his involvement in the Hong Kong democracy protests and is now living in the United Kingdom, reports the South China Morning Post.

Tommy Yuen Man On was born on May 13, 1980, in Hong Kong. According to The Sun, he had worked as a waiter and entered showbiz after he was scouted by Hong Kong media executives and celebrities Alan Tam, Eric Tsang, and Natalis Chan.

Am730 reports that Tommy Yuen became a part of the Hong Kong boy band ‘E-kids’ under the management of Hong Kong singer Alan Tam in 2002.

E-kids is comprised of Tommy Yuen, Alan Lam, and Tim Yuk. Am730 reports that Tommy Yuen’s role in the group was to compose the songs in the group.

As part of E-kids, Tommy Yuen is known for the songs ‘Smile’, ‘Love Secrets', and ‘Youth Turns Magic', among others.

Since E-kids first split in 2004, Tommy Yuen has become more well-known for his scandals than for his entertainment career. This included scandals such as selling fake BIGBANG tickets in 2012, and getting into heavy gambling debts, reports Oriental Daily.

According to The Standard, Tommy Yuen was reported to have been actively involved in the political protests in Hong Kong from 2019 to 2022, where he was actively using social media to rally protesters and raise funds.

According to Variety, Tommy Yuen was charged by Hong Kong authorities in 2023 and found guilty of sedition and fraud, for not only inciting hatred against the government but also pocketing money from political crowdfunding campaigns.

The South China Morning Post reports that Tommy Yuen was released from jail after 26 months of imprisonment. Since his release, Tommy Yuen has been sharing about the way his life has changed. He reports having been "tormented" by national security police.

According to the South China Morning Post, Tommy Yuen found the weekly check-ins on him and his family unbearable, prompting him to decide to relocate to the United Kingdom with his family, but not before deceiving Hong Kong authorities by purchasing a return flight and giving the impression that his move was temporary.

According to his Facebook page, Tommy Yuen intends to restart his musical career while in the UK. Tommy Yuen attempted to gather support through crowdfunding on Patreon again, but the campaign was halted after Hong Kong police publicly advised the public against financially supporting his newest campaign.
