What's become of Malia and Sasha Obama?

For eight years, the daughters of US President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama were growing up in the White House. But today, with both girls well into their 20s, they keep a rather low profile. Read on to see what the girls' post-White House lives have looked like...

Malia

Born on July 4, 1998, Malia was just 10 years old when she moved to the White House. That's where she went to the prom and graduated high school. As Barack described her to InStyle, she "enjoys people, enjoys life, and enjoys conversation. She's never bored, which is a bad a-- quality that can take you places."

Took a gap year to travel and test out the world of entertainment

After graduating high school in 2016, she took a gap year before going to college. And, as could be expected, it was unique. She had internships for the TV series 'Girls' and worked on Halle Barry's sci-fi drama 'Extant.' She also traveled extensively, even living with a family in a small town in Bolivia for several weeks. The New York Times reports that her Spanish was great.

A Harvard graduate

Then, Malia joined her parent's alma mater, Harvard. According to the prestigious college, she majored in Visual and Environmental Studies, which coincides with her interest in film. She graduated in 2021.

A legitimate writing career

Malia was recruited by Donald Glover to work on the Amazon show 'Swarm' about a Beyonce-like pop star. Her colleagues were genuinely impressed by what she brought to the table. "Some of her pitches were wild... they were just so good and so fun," co-creator Janine Nabers told ET. "She's an incredible writer... She's really, really dedicated to her craft." In the show, she is credited as Malia Ann.

Her own film debuted at Sundance

In 2024, 'Malia Ann' debuted as a director at the Sundance Film Festival. Her short film 'The Heart' was about a grieving man who receives an unusual request in his mother's will. It received mixed reviews, with many dismissing her as a "nepo baby."

Sasha

Born June 10, 2001, the youngest of the Obama Clan is said to take more after her mom Michelle, her grandmother Marian Robinson told People in 2007. "She's more determined. She's got her own mind made up." She is also said to be the comedian of the family.

Graduating high school... into Covid

Sasha graduated high school in 2019 and the beginning of her college career started with the COVID-19 pandemic. She started doing classes online at the University of Michigan, but then, in 2022, transferred to the University of Southern California (USC).

Turned 21 in 2022

Although Sasha turned 21 in 2022, Michelle and Barack, like many parents, refused to accept the passing of time. "No matter how old you get—you'll always be my baby girl. Look at those cheeks!" posted Barack, sharing this photo. "You will always be my littlest pea," shared Michelle.

Moving in with Malia

That same year, she moved to Los Angeles, where her sister Malia is also based, to attend USC. The two even moved into an apartment together. In her book 'The Light We Carry,' Michelle revealed that the two furnished their digs with IKEA and yard sales. They have even hosted their hard-to-please parents.

Graduated in sociology, has a boyfriend... now what?

In May 2023, her proud family was beaming as she graduated from USC, with a degree in sociology. What she will do with that remains me to seen! All grown up, the year prior, Barack even revealed that both girls also had boyfriends. Time flies, even if you're a former president
