Twitter reacted as Boris Johnson resigned

Boris Johnson announced he would step down after a record number of his cabinet had recently resigned. On 7th July 2022, Boris spoke to the world after a number of controversies led him to make the decision to leave Number 10 - and the public have reacted. The memes have come out in their dozens. We take a look at some of the best in the bunch.

Rick Astley for Prime Minister

A new Prime Minister? This Tweet has generated a lot of support in the comments. For many of us, the song will be replaying in our heads for days to come.

Surprise... or fear?

Joey Tribbiani's surprised face has jumped up many times as a meme; but this time was it the surprise Boris stepped down or is it the fear and panic of who's left in the picking to become the next Prime Minister? Joey's face says it all.

Should have gone to Iceland...

Even Iceland (who had previously supported Boris) are using the opportunity for a marketing push. The frozen foods chain provided us with a good pun, after so many of Boris' cabinet had resigned prior to his announcement on 7th July.

Partygate

Is Boris now free to party? Perhaps not... In fact the 'ex' Prime Minister will stay on until the Autumn, so the vultures aren't circling just yet.

Larry is become more famous by the minute

Larry the cat, who has a spotlight on live TV in the morning before Boris made his announcement, has attracted a lot of attention. This is our favourite meme of the Downing Street habitant.

No more 'May-be'

Boris had made it official in a rather strange speech to the public. This meme of ex-Prime Minister Theresa May (who also resigned from her post) gives an opinion of how she might be feeling.

Would I Lie to You?

This one is of famous British TV Show, 'Would I Lie to You', where celebrity guests and comedians are asked to read out a statement then continue to answer questions about it as if it were their own story. At the end they reveal if it is true or a lie. Encouraging many opinions.

A wax work

That's right, this is a wax work image of Boris Johnson and The Mirror claims Madame Tussauds actually added a vacancy sign to his display. Not untrue.

Boris' kids?

This lighthearted meme refers to the many children Boris Johnson has (and with a range of different partners). Boris has four children with his second wife, Barrister Marina Wheeler. Allegations came out that Boris had fathered a fifth child after an affair with Helen Macintyre in 2009. And finally he has two children with his current wife Carrie Johnson.

Define 'off'

It may seem that Boris Johnson is going to walk out of Downing Street with a suitcase in hand, but it isn't at that stage just yet. He is staying on to fulfil his duties and 'clear up'?

A sinking ship

Could this be the moment Boris responds saying the iceberg finally won?

Jaws

The speech didn't go down too well with many members of the public. This particular Twitter user deemed a bigger violin would be necessary after Boris Johnson claimed he 'fought so hard in the last few days to continue... not just because I wanted to do so but because I felt it was my job, my duty, my obligation to you, to continue to do what we promised in 2019.'

Apply within

Another lighthearted meme depicting the loss of the cabinet members as they rapidly handed in their resignation letters.

It never ends?

The public is still calling for Boris to go away completely and appoint an interim Prime Minister, as this barrage of resignations looks to go on and on. We hope the memes do too.

A cry for help

Nadine Dorries, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has also been the subject of many memes. Stating she is 100% behind the PM in her Twitter account has caused concerns and calls for her resignation also.

Holding on by a rope

The moment Boris tried to play the good old-fashioned-game of 'tug-of-war' has come back yet again in meme format. This time, the tweet refers to him holding on to the keys of 10 Downing Street. He's not gone yet.
