Andie MacDowell's power move at Cannes 2021

The British actress Andie MacDowell appeared at the 2021 Cannes film festival with a new look: her famous curly hair was gray" Going against the advice of her managers, MacDowell said her appearance with silvery locks was a "power move."

She told her managers: "It's time" for "salt and pepper"

The actress told Vogue: “My managers had actually said to me, ‘It’s not the time [for gray hair].' And I said, ‘I think you’re wrong, and I’m going to be more powerful if I embrace where I am right now."

"It’s time because in two years I’m going to be 65. If I don’t do it now, I won’t have the chance to be salt and pepper. I always wanted to be salt and pepper!”

"I feel more honest"

“Once I did it, it was just so clear to me that my instincts were right because I’ve never felt more powerful,” she told Vogue. “I feel more honest. I feel like I’m not pretending. I feel like I’m embracing right where I am. I feel really comfortable. And in a lot of ways, I think it’s more striking on my face. I just feel like it suits me.”

Hollywood A-Lister

Most '90s kids will remember Andie MacDowell from classic films such as 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' and 'Groundhog Day'. But where is the glamorous Hollywood actress now?

Still acting

Andie MacDowell has not given up the screen by any means. In fact, quite the opposite. She has rather a lot of up-and-coming projects, ready to be released this year and next. She has been busy and spent a lot of time away recently filming. Let’s have a look as to where we will see her face pop up next.

No Man’s Land

A modern-day western, this film was released in January 2021 and had a mixed review from critics. MacDowell plays Monica Greer who, along with her husband raises her two children on a ranch. Many critics have said that the film does well in giving viewers beautiful photography of open landscapes, but fails to bring any empathy and a story line to care about.

MacDowell definitely made us care in her recent series, Wireless...

Wireless

Suspense, suspense, suspense! A sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat thriller that follows the main character, who is left alone after veering his car off the road, fight for his life with only a smartphone as company. Stressful to watch, but Andy MacDowell shines as his mother and shows she can pull off the ‘thriller’ genre.

Along for the ride

Andie MacDowell is joined by Kate Bosworth to star in a Netflix film adaptation of Sarah Dessen’s young adult novel, 'Along for the Ride'. It will be an intriguing series that focuses on a young woman coping with her parent’s divorce who then decides to let her hair down and she finds a dazzling nightlife inside a small town.

A fascinating plot

"The summer before college Auden meets the mysterious Eli, a fellow insomniac. While the seaside town of Colby sleeps, the two embark on a nightly quest to help Auden experience the fun, carefree teen life she never knew she wanted," a synopsis said. Although a teen-focused rom-com, Andie MacDowell will be one to watch here, too.

Good Girl Jane

Production of this film wrapped in March 2021 in Los Angeles finally, after a shooting shutdown in 2020 due to the pandemic. The film is about a young girl who finds comfort from her pain in a hard drug-dealer and then becomes entangled in his meth ring. Golden-globe nominee MacDowell will star in this film about alienation, sex, drugs and loneliness.

Work doesn’t stop for MacDowell

MacDowell must have been popping in and out of filming (and in and out of countries) as she was also filming in Canada, returning only in April 2021. She had been there for seven months shooting ‘Maid’, a new Netflix series based on Stephanie Land’s bestselling memoir, 'Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive'.

Maid

This will be her first production in which she starts alongside her real-life daughter, Margaret Qualley, who will play the lead as a single mother who tries to make ends meet as she struggles financially and gets a job as a maid. The series is set to be a true, gritty and beautiful exploration of poverty in America.

MacDowell can relate

The actress said in an interview, “Well, I didn't grow up wealthy. My mother was a teacher, and she also had a drinking problem. I worked at McDonald's when I was in high school and had to make my own money. I wore all hand-me-downs. I didn't live a luxurious existence, so I know what it's like to not have money. I was listening to Maid again this morning, and it was right on the part where she goes to the grocery store and has to figure out how to buy food.”

L’Oreal model

Andie MacDowell’s face has been seen promoting the skincare products from L’Oreal. She is a fan of ‘drugstore’ products which allow people to buy good quality products at a lesser price. In an interview, she commented on how important it is, especially during the restrictions of the pandemic, to be able to colour your hair at home. Although MacDowell didn’t use a single packet…

The silver fox

MacDowell presented her new look on instagram and called herself a ‘silver fox’ when she decided to give up colouring her hair and go for the natural, greying look instead. “What happened was, I wasn’t coloring my hair, and it was half-coloured back here,” she said touching the back of her head in February 2021.

"I went for it"

You could see my roots, and my daughters kept telling me that I looked bad***. And [that] really appealed to me. So I went for it, and I am enjoying it.”

Still looks amazing

Andie MacDowell still glows and shines as she did many years ago. She doesn’t wear much make up and sticks to a solid routine of moisturising, meaning that at 63 years old, she could still pass as someone much younger.

Still fresh-faced after a tough haul

At just ten years old Andie had to learn to look after herself. Her parents divorced and she went to live with her mother who was an alcohol addict. She had a lot to deal with and now speaks openly about the difficulties living with an addiction such as alcoholism.

Her life took a turn

At 20 years old her life took a turn. She began working as a model which get her noticed for film. She began to appear in films’ although one of her first, Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, was a difficult moment in her professional career.

Dubbed

MacDowell is from South Carolina and has a strong Southern accent. She was given the role of Jane in 'Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes' and, after production had finished, the producers decided her voice wasn’t right for the role of high-society Jane. Andie MacDowell later learned that Glenn Close had been asked to dub over all of MacDowell’s lines. She was mortified.

Divorced

Andie MacDowell divorced her ex husband of 13 years in 1999. He was a Norwegian model who found a lot of success in his own right but never really enjoyed what he did. Paul Qualley gave up modelling to pursue the ranching business and now manages the Paul Qualley ranch in Montana. They had three children together.

Justin Qualley

Not much is known about Justin Qualley. He, like his sisters, lived his youth outside the limelight and never stepped into it. Justin works in real estate back in Montana, where the family maintains the Paul Qualley ranch. Although MacDowell emphasises she loves her three children equally, she has the least close relation with her son but still manages to post about him frequently on Instagram.

Daughters

Andie MacDowell has two daughters who have taken a page from their mother’s book and have stepped into the worlds of modelling and acting. Rainey Qualley, who is 31 years old, has just released her next movie, whilst her sister, Margaret Qualley, 26, has also just finished shooting her new show.

Rainey Qualley

Rainey started out her career as a musician under the name Rainsford. She released her first song, ‘Too Close’ in 2016 and continues to make music, despite making the transition from musician to actress.

Ultrasound

The film has just seen its premier at the Tribeca Film Festival on 15th June 2021. A dreamlike, twisted plot, based on Conor Stechshulte’s graphic novel, ‘Generous Bosom’, which follows the main characters and their complicated storylines. It left many critics feeling confused.

Sarah Margaret Qualley

AKA just Margaret Qualley; she started out as model at the young age of 16 and since modelled for Chanel both on the runway and in print campaigns. She has made such a success out of her modelling career that she can boast being on the front pages of Paper, Glamour AND Vogue.

The actress

In 2019 she appeared alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt in ‘Once Upon a time in Hollywood’ as the character, Pussycat. Margaret excelled in the role but, whilst she was preparing for the part, she spent a lot of time researching the Manson family history which, according to the actress, gave her "terrifying nightmares."

Maid with mum

Margaret has a great CV already and she’s just getting started. She has appeared in many films and mini series which have gone on to receive great critical acclaim, and even earning her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Limited series of movie for her role in Fosse/Verdon. She has just finished filming with her mother in the drama-comedy series, Maid.

Family

The sisters are incredibly close and both live together, sharing a dog named Books. They often post pictures on Instagram calling each other ‘best friend’ and ‘my idol’. They are a very close family and Rainey in April talked of the difficulty of being apart during the last year - from quarantine to filming abroad.

Staying connected as a family

In April 2021, Rainey said in an interview, “Mom has been gone for the past few months, so we haven’t actually been together all that much, but we’ve been in touch constantly on the phone, FaceTime and texting. Regardless of where we are, we can still take care of one another and be there for one another… That’s been special, to be able to work on staying connected when we can't actually be together.”

A positive outlook

Andie remembers COVID lockdown as most people do: a social and logistical struggle filled with difficulties and sorrow. However, Andie had some positive points to add: she said, “That was two good things that came from COVID: Sara Margaret learned how to play the piano, and I became a great cook. I’ve been making soup every weekend for her, and I make my own bone broth. I’ve never tasted a bone broth as good as mine.” Well, a model, actress AND a (humble) cook!

Quarantine/Groundhog Day

Many have said that quarantine felt like Groundhog Day, with the idea that the day repeats itself again and again, taken from the hit 1993 film that Andie MacDowell starred in alongside Bill Murray. But Andie recently spoke out about the positives of this idea.

Make us into more empathetic, generous and kind-hearted people

MacDowell saying “It's a transformation that can happen when you have time to reflect, and that's what happens to him in Groundhog Day. He actually is not a very nice person, but that time transforms him into a much more empathetic, generous, kind-hearted person. So maybe there is a lot of that going on, hopefully, during COVID.”

A well-loved film

Although everyone remembers Groundhog Day and it’s a 90s classic in all our hearts, Bill Murray doesn’t remember it as being such a joy to film. In fact, his problem was with Andie.

The hair

“Andie MacDowell drove me absolutely crazy on that movie,” Bill Murray told Collider. “She drove me absolutely nuts. We were always waiting for Andie MacDowell’s hair. The fact is, Andie MacDowell has the greatest hair you have ever seen, in your life. When she finally would arrive, you had to just give up because that hair was really great, but she did drive me crazy.”

Andie looks back with fond memories

Andie spoke out about her memories of filming and it was quite different. “Bill is so funny,” MacDowell told The Wrap. “He’s a comic genius. Listening and reacting to Bill — because Bill is not the same in every take — so listening and react. His nature is to improv and make it his own every take. It was mostly fresh. I had to really be in the scene and just listen to him.”
