What's eating Jennifer Lopez? Tour canceled, separation rumored
'Rice and beans!' you may have yelled when reading the title - a reference to a viral video in which JLo explains her favorite food. It was one of those moments in the past week when social media users were all over the star, and not in a good way.
While promoting their film 'Atlas' on Netflix, JLo shared a stage with co-stars Simu Liu and Sterling K. Brown. She got the question what her favorite food was and replied, in typical Jenny-from-the-block style: "I'm Puerto Rican, so I like rice and beans..."
Right after she dropped her Puerto Rican heritage, Sterling Brown, seated next to her, started joking. "Are you Puerto Rican? Get outta here!" he said sarcastically, as this is something JLo often tells about herself. He then proceeded to speak Spanish, ridiculing Lopez's identification as a Latina: "Arroz, frijoles, pollo, a mi gusta!" It was all one big joke to him.
On another occasion, also shared on social media, Jennifer Lopez was giving an interview about the new film while standing on a red carpet. She did it in English. Then, surprisingly, Simu Liu jumped in and fluently continued the conversation in Spanish. Next to him was Brown, and, you guessed it, he too started speaking Spanish. JLo's honest reaction: "They speak better Spanish than I do, I'm always being shamed for my Spanish," as cited by the Atlanta Black Star.
Lately, it seems like JLo can't do anything right in the eyes of fans and critics. Next to Liu and Brown, she's being slammed for coming off as arrogant while pretending to be Jenny from the Block. "She hasn't eaten rice and beans for decades," a commenter wrote below the video.
But there's also the failure of her previous movie, a very personal one. 'This is me... now' is an autobiographical document. It came with an album and a tour, and none of them are performing well.
Most of the time, Jennifer Lopez shines up and down the stage, but sometimes she has bad times like any other mortal... and she's currently going through a rough patch.
For starters, the singer has been involved in rumors about an alleged marital crisis with her husband, actor and director Ben Affleck. The couple got married in 2022 in Las Vegas.
Back in 2004, during their first relationship, Bennifer had canceled their engagement because of intense pressure from the media. They were one of the most beloved couples in Hollywood and cameras followed them everywhere.
Now, it seems that history repeats itself. Several media outlets have indicated that, once again, the exposure to the media is causing a marital crisis for the couple.
A source revealed to People that Jennifer likes to share everything about her life, While Ben is more introspective and reserved. The source also said that Jennifer "needs that (exposure), but that doesn't make Ben happy and it causes him a lot of stress."
In fact, on several occasions, Ben Affleck seemed very bothered by the presence of cameras, whether on a carpet or in the streets. He has made it clear on several occasions that he prefers not to expose his private life. However, as he's married to one of the most famous singers in the world, that's a little difficult to do.
In recent days, JLo has appeared alone at several important events, including the premiere of her new movie, 'Atlas.' Ben Affleck, otherwise a movie buff, didn't show up.
The new movie is going through a sort of rollercoaster, as it has very good viewership on Netflix but horrible reviews from critics. And then there's the teasing from her co-stars at every public occasion. It's not easy for JLo.
All the things we mentioned seem to have taken their toll on the 54-year-old singer. She's decided to cancel the tour of the United States and Canada for this summer.
JLo had her first show of the 'This is Me... Live' tour on June 26 in Orlando, Florida. But that date, just like all others, has been canceled.
In a statement shared by Live Nation, Lopez indicated that she is going to take some time to be with her children, her family, and close friends.
However, several commentators have remarked that the ticket sales for her tour were pretty bad. So that may well have been an argument to shut it down, too.
It must be added, though, that there's no confirmation of the hypothesis that the singer canceled her tour due to low ticket sales.
"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down," JLo wrote in her statement. "Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again."
Although the official reason for the cancelation was family time, several media have suggested that she may also be suffering from an excessive workload. And on top of that, marital problems.
"They started having issues a few months ago as Jen had started ramping up work commitments and prepping for her tour," a source told US Weekly. "Jen is very focused on work. They are on two completely different pages most of the time."
Either way, JLo's fans are now worried because they believe the star must be suffering a lot. No one cancels a tour willy-nilly.
So far, Jennifer and Ben have neither confirmed nor denied their separation, but journalists have concluded that the actor has been living in another house since mid-May.
They attend one of Ben's son's game together, making an effort to show that everything is fine between them, but everything else suggests that the reality is different.
Fans of the couple hope that they can resolve their differences and stay together. The couple reunited after 20 years apart and their love story deserves a happy ending.
